Got a new little toy tonight made a trade with a guy. Its a millermatic 251 has and tweko gun on it if i remember. came with a role of .45 hard wire which i think i'm going to get ride of also came with .35 fluxcore that i'm not sure i want either. IF i could get some suggestions i would appreciate it. I also want to get a spool gun and i guess i need a bottle of 100% argon if i'm not mistaken. Sorry if i sound like a newb but i came from stick and trying to get in this mig game. here are a few pics. =John Last edited by landman; 05-23-2009 at 11:52 PM.
Reply:That was the machine I wanted to get when I started mig welding, nice trade! City of L.A. Reply:My shop uses .035 hard wire with 75%-25%. Runs great.just my 2 cents.
Reply:I think i will get some .35 hard wire this week
Reply:That thing sure looks rough. clean it up nice.  I run .035 solid wire and 75%-25% in mine.
Reply:Keep the .035 fluxcore wire.  If you have to weld outside in the breeze, you'll want to use that.  Inside the shop, .035 solid wire and either straight CO2 or CO2/Argon mix is fine.  Pure argon is only needed for aluminum and not the right gas for carbon steel.I would keep the .045 wire, it's good for filling bigger joints on thicker metal.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:For medium & heavier steel I like flux core wire of the dual shield type E71T-1 .035 & .045 & CO2  gas works really well & leaves a really smooth bead.   Works especially well on Hot rolled steel because of it's cleaning ability.  Argon/CO2 mix  75/25 helps control spatter.  For lighter steel .030 or 035 ER70S-6 solid wire 75/25, or 85/15 mixed gas is my preferance. As far a drive rolls I use V groove rolls for the solid wire to feed flux core or solid wire.   Your book will recomend serated rolls for cored wire but I have always found them to give way more feed problems than if I stick to the V rolls. For any of the above wires a spool gun isn't needed at all the will all feed easily through a 15' gun.  I like tweco guns myself. They are rugged & consumables are avalible anywhere & usually cheaper to buy than most any other brand. If you are going to MIG Al. a spool gun is nice (almost a necessity) & 100% argon gas is needed there. To give you an idea on gas pricing if you havent already checked.  Large tanks of CO2 cost me $19.95 per fill. 75/25 on same size bottle is $60.00 & 100% argon is $40.00.For an all around MIG machine that Miller 251 Is a really good machine.  It may have an equal or 2 out there as far as arc stability etc. but probably none better.   It will hold it's resale value better than any other.IF IT WORKS, DON'T FIX IT2 Lincoln CV-300 / LN-7 GMALinde-VI 253,400 & 450 w/MIG35 feedersCNC Table with Oxweld O/A & Hypertherm 1250G3Lincoln Ranger GXT 250Hobart-MicroWire 300ESAB Heliarc 161ESAB-Mobilemaster 2 CC/CV Feeders& more

Reply:skip the little spool guns and go straight for the 30A with fastips.  just my .02
Reply:Beautiful machineHow do you like that kind of work clamp.  I've never tried one like that.  Mine looks like a clothespin.  Metal with a copper contact points.  My hands don't seem to have the strength to use the ones like the one that came with your machine.  My arthritis makes it a solid B####Probably a better contact than mine"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:LOL Samm, those big clamps definitely give the hands a workout.   I took mine off and replaced with Lenco style clamps.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:I just plain ole don't like those ground clamps.  The only thing I have found that really holds up for me are the Tweco 500A. clamps that resemble a "C" clamp  https://secure.ramweldingsupply.com/...ew.mcic?s=2583IF IT WORKS, DON'T FIX IT2 Lincoln CV-300 / LN-7 GMALinde-VI 253,400 & 450 w/MIG35 feedersCNC Table with Oxweld O/A & Hypertherm 1250G3Lincoln Ranger GXT 250Hobart-MicroWire 300ESAB Heliarc 161ESAB-Mobilemaster 2 CC/CV Feeders& more
