Anti Splatter Application questions

I bought some radnor anti splatter and nozzle shield (solvent based) because someone replied to an earlier thread where I asked about using C3 (3% C02) gas to mig some stainless steel and he said I would get excess splatter with this mix due to the metal transfer using a fabricator 181i.  Anyway,  I wanted to know if you can spray the anti splatter over the weld joints?  I'm confused because if the metal should be clean before welding and I spray anti splatter on the joints, wouldn't I be contaminating the metal with oils or what ever is in the can?   Thanks,
Reply:I buy the spray kind. And I do spay it sometimes on projects and it will work. Reply:but your not applying  it on with a brush or taping off the area of the weld joint so how can you keep it from getting on the area you are joining?
Reply:You can only get so close. Give your self just enough to weld. Reply:I don't really have an issue with the splatter but I just wanted to know how to use the spray if I did need it.  The directions on the can don't really give any direction other than to hold the can 10 inches away from the surface.  I sprayed some on while welding some hinges to a smoker I'm building. I realized after the first hinge that I didn't have a need for it but now I'm curious how to use the product, again because everything says you want the metal that is going to be welded to be clean of contaminates and with anti splatter you would be adding to the surface.

Reply:I bought it for splatter welding metal not the nozzle.

Reply:You can spray this stuff everywhere.  I use it all the time, and have nevr had issues with it.  It's good stuff!!Can even spray your dog with the stuff "Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Spray application antispatter and nozzle dip are really two different things. The spray can be used for both but is not as effective for use on the nozzle. The nozzle dip works great for keeping your nozzle clean but if you get too much and it melts out into your weld joint it will cause problems.Having said that, AWS D1.1 2010 states in clause 5.15 Preparation of Base Metal that antispatter compound may remain.I know you are talking about using it on SS and I do not have my AWS D1.6 handy but I will go out on a limb from memory and say it is probably the same.I have never had a problem welding over the spray on antispatter but I guess if you went wild with it (spraying a buttload on) you might have a problem.Just give it a light coating, let it dry and weld away. jrw159
