I inherited this and just wondering what would be the best use or how to use this best. It is a hunk of steel, 3" thick x 8" dia perfectly flat. I was going to use it as a pounding block like at the rear of an anvil. What would be the best way to do this? As far as making a stand with a piece of wood between it??? Or can you think of a better use for it. I just primered it and am going to paint it to prevent it from rusting a hole in it. Any ideas?"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:hah, that I like, maybe weld some SS candles to it...          looks like it'd make an interesting stable base for something...

Reply:I have one about that size.  I use it for: well, mostly a pounding block.  Or to hold pieces in place while I weld or braze them.  I just lay it on the anvil of the vice or on the welding table or wherever else I want to pound.(Retired) Professional firefighter, amateur everything else I try to do...Oh yeah:  Go Big Red!   (You know: one of the 12 members of the Big 10 cuz we left the 10 members of the Big 12...)

Reply:I bought a piece of COPPER from the Metal Yard that was almost EXACTLY the same dimensions (1" thicker) that was cut out with a Water-Jet or something...  Simply Beautiful to look at and made a WICKED Heat-Sink.  Was going to use it as a base for a Stainless / Copper Lamp kinda' thing, but was offered a good chunk o' change and let it go.  Anyway,... I'd use it for something like that....Cheers,Miller Diversion 165120 amp Buzz BoxVictor Oxy/Ace Oxy/LPGSmith "Little" Oxy/LPGHypertherm Powermax 30Lot's of Misc. tools n' crap....

Reply:If it is going to be used as a pounding block like an anvil is then why paint it?All that paint will just get beaten into the metal you are playing with then it's just a big mess..Paint the cosmetic parts not the working parts....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Looks to me like it would make a good anvil.  I'd take a piece of tree trunk, cut out a recess the same diameter of the piece (fraction larger) about an inch deep and use it as a base.
Reply:It's kind of light for an anvil.  But sand off the top and go to work on it.  For a lot of jobs, it'll be just the thing you need.Jack OlsenMy garage website
Reply:I haven't the foggiest.  If had it, and If the surface were both flat and smooth, I might spray-mount some wet or dry sandpaper on it and use it as a surface plate, for flattening small sealing flanges, etc (which were originally machined flat, but have became distorted for one reason or another, such as welding.)Maybe set it up on bearings as a simple, (inertia-driven) welding positioner.  I'm guessing it might have enough rotational mass that if you were to start spinning it, it will keep on spinning for a while, on some good bearings.Or, just set it aside and inventory it as a scrap piece.  If the opportunity arises to fabricate something out of it, you will know.  Who knows, maybe some time you'll dream up an item you need machined out of a sold steel billet that it fits within those dimensions.
