Reply:Maybe a little clarification is in order. I don't like cheap stuff, I like the best or as close to the best as I can justify. I don't know what is on it for a torch now, there doesn't seem to be a brand on it anywhere. The water hose leaks and has been spliced and taped up quite a few times. It was in this shape when I bought the machine. I want 25', can't think of a reason not to. I hear that rubber hoses are better than vinyl other than that I don't know what to replace it with.Miller millermatic 251Miller aircrafter 330st, wp201961 Lincoln SA200Ellis 1600 bandsawLogan 820 latheSouth Bend 13"Bridgeport M Head
Reply:Come on guys, give me some pointers here. Is rubber that much better than vinyl? Is there any difference between an old 18 series torch and a new one? Brands? I have searched but have not come up with much.Miller millermatic 251Miller aircrafter 330st, wp201961 Lincoln SA200Ellis 1600 bandsawLogan 820 latheSouth Bend 13"Bridgeport M Head

Reply:There are several brands out there that are good... I would recommend Weldcraft (the industry standard). I would also note that CK Torches are good, and quite popular... Weld Tech torches are fine but we don't sell them, so I can't recommend due to my own bias. That said, all three mentioned are quality and use industry standard parts. Which means if you have a 20 series torch you can use the same collets / collet bodies, etc whether you have Weldcraft or Weld tech torch... mostly the parts should be readily available at your local supply house. (or online of course). The difference between these and ones that are say, "Weldcraft Style" has to do with the materials used in manufacturing... engineering, etc. This article talks about this very issue:http://joewelder.com/2008/07/21/tig-torch-materials-whats-the-difference/Cables. We almost always recommend the rubber vs. the plastic cables. Plastic melts. Rubber is more flexible and easier to drag around, a little more sturdy. More expensive, but should last longerNew vs. older torch..,.. well, as long as you take care of your torch, its not cracked or damaged, replace the o-rings and gaskets as needed, maybe run a tap repair to prevent thread galling... an older torch should be just as good as a newer one.Hope that helps!-----------------------Carmen Electrodewww.CarmenElectrode.comand the boss blogs at www.JoeWelder.comall powered by www.Arc-Zone.com |
