backer bar

I need your thoughts on what to use for a backer bar to weld some 1/2 plate. They must be full pen. welds. I was thinking of usinga 3/8 brass or more specificly copper backer. These are moment connections. Yes I am aware of ceramic backer bar. BUT to my knowledge stick does not deposit enough metal to use ceramic. The specs. call for SMAW to be used. So any thoughts?Thanks guys.'Mike
Reply:I guess you are not allowed to use an integral backing bar of steel that gets welded in place and left there?
Reply:That was my original thought until I read more of the spec. My first thought was moment connections....FCAW....ceramic....then I read more. The backer must be removed according to spec.
