Screwin' Around..

I had the pleasure of repairing 3 Screw/Auger Stainless shafts this A.M.Not sure of the stainless alloy so I just used 1/16" 308 on them..They were all pretty much worn in the same spot and there is just a rope seal that goes where the wear is..Shaft in the positioner..Wheels holding up the end and the aluminum plate over the wheels is my arm/hand rest..Worn area..Welded area..The ends were OK and it's best to turn the weld as near to the chuck as you can get..Doing this at the end of the machine like normal just promotes vibrations really bad..After indicating in the end nearest the chuck I put the indicator as close to where the auger screw as I could to check the bend/runout..They bent around .020 so you just find the hi side and whack it with a brass hammer and I was able to get them to run within .002...HI SPEED TOOLING is needed here..Carbide tools just break the ends off..Finished part..I have done these in the past and they suck.But anyway..I get all the fun jobs.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Real good looking repair zap, I like the split collet for small parts.Funny how shafts inside stuffing box/packing glands keep coming back... Is it from a small pug mill?Matt
