I been stick welding as a hobby for awhile. Self taught w/ books so all I know is what I've read and experienced on my own. I've not found anything to help answer this though...I'd like to get a MIG gun and wire feeded so I can use MIG style welding, but money's tight.  Some time back a friend gave me a little 110 Volt MIG welder (not sure of the max current). It's not much use for anything but real light stuff and I seldom use it since I got a used Miller 120 amp "stick" machine.Curious if I could use the little MIG units feeder and gun and get the current from the larger machine to realize a MIG setup.  Sounds simple enough but I'd figured I'd ask about it.thanks
Reply:Welcome to the forum Jerry. No, you cannot weld as you described. Stick welders are constant current machines, and most wire feeders only work with constant voltage power supplies. There are not very many shortcuts with respect to welding.
Reply:i was gonna say what daddy said.. welcome, be careful, and in welding, more than anything else ive ever tried, if it "sounds simple enough" you  probably arent there yet.  welding is complicated. this forum will help.
Reply:I agree with daddy & weldbead You most likely can't make what you have work for a MIG."No, you cannot weld as you described. Stick welders are constant current machines, and most wire feeders only work with constant voltage power supplies."daddy's above statement is dead on as most welding equipment is purpose designed.Several years back I did come up with a wire feeder (HOBART AGH-27) that would run off 110V wall current. There was no real electronics (PC boards) to deal with.   It was all controlled by micro switches & relays, timed relays etc.     I was able to jumper a couple circuits to gain mig gun tirgger control to make the feeder & gas solenoid work.   I hooked it to a 250A stick machine & could weld heavy material 1/4" & up with it.    There was no contactor in the rig anywhere so the mig wire stayed hot all the time. Just like a stick rod in the holder.    It worked good enough for me to build a front bucket for my backhoe & it has held together.   But it was far from a good system.Even the CC/CV (commonly called suitcase) wire feeders that are designed to work with a CC (stick) machine aren't equal to a true CV-MIG welding machine.   CC/CV feeders work well enough & certainly have their place in the industry.  You will rarely find one in use anywhere but with engine drive welders doing field work.IF IT WORKS, DON'T FIX IT2 Lincoln CV-300 / LN-7 GMALinde-VI 253,400 & 450 w/MIG35 feedersCNC Table with Oxweld O/A & Hypertherm 1250G3Lincoln Ranger GXT 250Hobart-MicroWire 300ESAB Heliarc 161ESAB-Mobilemaster 2 CC/CV Feeders& more
Reply:If you know how you could do it, however it would cast 3 times as much as a good 240 volt Mig.
