Every time l tig up some Schedule 40 pipe it gets all crudded up after the root. Regardless of how clean i grind it inside and out it just welds dirty. i'm fairly proficient with tig until it comes to pipe. Is this just how carbon pipe welds or what???
Reply:Picture?
Reply:turn your heat and weave further to the edgesGood ol Texas pipe welder
Reply:Dystopia  -  If you were "proficient with TIG" you would not be getting your results.Carbon steel is the least utopic of the common metals when TIGed, it requiresgood pre-prep, and re-prep every time you stop; are you back purging?  Providepics for a definitive answer.   Opus
Reply:Gap?  Keyhole?Filler?Welcome by the way.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:A picture would help. Is it right after the root or after your finished with the entire weld? What type of wire s2 or s6?
Reply:I dont have a camera1/8 feathered gap1/8 S-2 rodLay it in there 90-105 amps.It progressively gets worse. (after root) I just seem to keep collecting **** in my puddle and you can see it floating around. The prep of the pipe is as good as you can get it. lt just seems to weld different to me. ldk man. That and l'm using scratch start torches….cant stand them.Last edited by Dystopia; 07-29-2012 at 04:45 PM.
Reply:Dystopia  -  Feathered Gap is a term I have never heard.  What is your land profile?   Opus
Reply:Is it cheap seam welded pipe or good drawn steel pipe?Material quality makes a big diffference
Reply:I took the liberty of copying this pic off the net.  Like Drujinin says.....could be the steel make-up.  De-oxidizers are doing their job floating impurities to the surface. Attached Images
Reply:we use s2 rod at work.  the crap in the puddle is normal. It all should float in the puddle.  If it disappears, stop and grind out the silicone.  they give us the cheapest chinese filler possible then shoot it severe.
Reply:I've seen some guys use Emory cloth to remove the copper color from tig wire. I've done it a few times. It does cut down on all the silica floating around. Maybe you could try it
Reply:OldSparks you tha man….that's exactly what i was talking about.I thought it was the deoxidizer's doing there job. If you were to run a couple passes over top of that bead without cleaning it…would that show up on an x-ray…inclusions etc... or would they burn back out?l like a grinding wheel as opposed to wire wheeling that type of situation. It runs nice and smooth for me when i hit it lightly with a grinder. l still feel like a jackass though when i do that it's not like 'm running 6010's.
