I purchased a used Lincoln Electric Weld Pak 155 a few months ago, and stupidly didn't ask the previous owner to demonstrate that it works. I had 240V wired into my basement, and when I plugged it in for the first time I found out that the hose was jammed with old bent wire, and the gun handle was poorly sliced leaving loose connections. I purchased a new gun and now the wire feeds through just fine. But when I try to lay a bead, the gun just splatters. I am using flux cored wire. I would like to start using gas, but before I spend any more money on the welder, I want to make sure that it's capable of welding. Is there anything in the welder itself that would ware out/ be broken and cause it to splatter? I am completely new to welding, so I have no idea how the internals work, but I'd like to learn.
Reply:Other guys may have better suggestions, but the first thing I would check is that you have a good ground on the piece you are welding. Check your clamp, put as close to the weld area as practical, grind to shiny metal if needed.Second, look at the owner's manual to be sure you have the right polarity for fluxcore.Of course, verify your amps for the thickness you are welding. More details and pictures will help get you welding sooner. For example, what amps are you set on, what size filler wire are you using, and what kind of metal are you welding - mild steel, thickness of both pieces, if you are joining or just running beads, and is it shiny clean?Good luck. Ask questions. Post pictures. Start welding.Burt _____________________Miller Syncrowave 250Millermatic 211Miller 375 Plasma Cutter Hobart Handler 12010FtDrillBit.com
Reply:I have the same welder. If you could define, 'just splatters' a little better and include some pics it would be helpful to us.Flux core wire does have a lot more spatter and smoke than MIG, however, it sounds like you have the voltage (letter) setting too high for the wire speed which will arc right back to the tip. Also you have to make sure you are using the right type of drive roller and drive roller pressure. See the owner's manual for all of those answers about basic set up.Good luck,PapaLincoln Idealarc 250 (circa 1962)Lincoln Weldpak 155 w/Mig KitLincoln Squarewave TIG 175
Reply:Thanks for the replies, I will try to post some pictures by tomorrow!
