I have a large co2 tank and since i already have an acetylene setup can the co2 tank be converted to an oxygen tank. Therefore i would only need the regulators hoses and torch tips to have oxy-acetylene setup. If anyone knows the differences in the tanks please explain as I know alot of people just like to give their opinion and it's not always necessarily true. Thx guys
Reply:There's a good chance your LWS will just swap that tank for an O2 bottle and you are done. I frequently swap large O2 bottles for argon or C25 and back depending on what I am working on, rather than lease more than one large bottle. The valve on the CO2 tank is different than that on an O2 bottle so at a minimum the valve needs to be changed and the tank would need to be cleaned for O2. Also some CO2 tanks are set up as liquid, some as gas so that may cause an issue. Thats not a DIY job. If you take it to a Hydro shop they can do the cleaning and swap the valve and relabel the tank, but you'll pay more than you would to just swap out a tank, and you still would have to take it and get it filled.
Reply:CO2 bottles are built to different pressure standards; CO2 liquefies at room temperature under a pressure (I've forgotten what) well under that to which standard O2, Argon, Argon/CO2. and similar bottles are filled. Therefore, CO2 bottles can't be used with the other gasses. As DSW says, ask your LWS if it can be exchanged.
Reply:Never heard of a gas CO2 tank.  Even the tiny paintball tanks hold liquid.I think CO2 is around 800PSI at room temperature, so that's well under half the pressure of an O2 tank.Still, your gas supplier probably deals in both, and might possibly let you trade your tank in your tank for a serious discount on an O2 tank.  I just recently traded in a fire extinguisher for a CO2 tank (less of a change there, but . . .)
Reply:I have had a compressed (rather than liquid) CO2 tank before, they do exist.I agree, take it to the local gas supplier and ask to swap out for an oxygen bottle of whatever size you need.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Compressed CO2 is still a liquid at any pressure that stores a usable amount.Like any liquid tank, they can come with or without a siphon, to deliver liquid, or gas, but just like propane (or butane), there's always liquid at the bottom of the tank, until you've run out.
Reply:awesome... thx guys, I'm going to call my lws first thing tommorro morning and see what they say.
