I was reading the october issue of rod and custom magazine, page 60 and they were talking about welding gas. One of which being hydrogen. Is this a typo or do they really want a bang out of welding.
Reply:i would venture to say someone put the wrong stuff down. haha.. that'd be an interesting thing to see.. from about 100' away..http://kawispeed.com/ -moderator and tech deluxewww.myspace.com/trickortrack -cuz i have no life
Reply:I weld with hydrogen all the time, whats there to be confused about?
Reply:There are a couple of different welding processes that use hydrogen.  Strange but true.
Reply:The guys who do a lot of gas welding of aluminum can tell you a lot about the use of hydrogen.Personally, I'd don't even have a bottle of the stuff in the shop.  Got most of the others though.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.

Reply:Thanks DSW.The responses (and lack of responses--176 viewings) just points up what a "lack of knowledge" exists on this board.Gas welding and arc (stick) welding are the basis for all the welding we commonly do today.  It would appear that we now have a "new generation" of want-to-be welders who would prefer to just jump over the basics and get right to the task at hand.  Kinda like building a house with no foundation.I guess it comes down to the old statement, "Ignorance is Bliss".Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.

Reply:Duaneb55,The fact that 170 posters had read the thread and not responded (didn't have an answer) is what I'm referring to.  The use of hydrogen as a fuel gas in gas welding has been an established fact for a lot longer than even I've been on this planet. Some of the comments from "professional welders" just made me shake my head.Have we become a society who's sole source of information is to ask questions on an internet message board.  I come from the "school of hard knocks" where you learned under a mentor and were expected to do your own reading/study in the books that described the trade.I've probably got at least a dozen references here at the house that deal with gas welding.  Every one of them describes the use of hydrogen in detail.  Even Finch's books (available at any Lowes/HD) discuss the process.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:The OP never came back to his Thread- after Makoman told him he uses Hydrogen. I figger if the OP ain't gonna come back, why bother answering his question? Reply:i see i misred the whole thing.. haha.. what an idiot!!i thought "shielding gas" when i saw that. tho, it almost wouldn't surprise me if theres some exotic process that incorporates that as a shield somehow!! sundown.. sad but true sir. sad but true.the internet is the "easy way out" of experimenting, talking to people face-to-face and combing thru 1000s of pages of books and devoting hundreds of hours to reading and re-reading the scripture the pros (such as yourself) have come to know and love. (maybe love.. haha)i will never say i'm an expert at welding and i don't have nearly a tip of the icebergs worth the investment you or most of the other members here do in the field.. after all, welding was not my primary field when i entered the work force.. electrical (controls, engineering) was.. but i've developed quite an interest in welding and everything pertaining to it.alot of good info on here tho. i've learned a ton and look forward to learning more.(even if i DO have to read a book!!)http://kawispeed.com/ -moderator and tech deluxewww.myspace.com/trickortrack -cuz i have no life
Reply:Whitehendrix,Laughing. You'll be amazed at what "good" information can be found in books.Little tidbits, like what Hydrogen is used for.  Can't be used for ferrus metals (hydrogen enbrittlement) but is highly recommended for use on aluminum. The thing I've found about books is that the information is "generally" much more accurate than some of the info I've seen put out as gospel on the internet. It's amazing to me really, that a guy would go out and spend $3,000 for a new tig and be unwilling to spend $50 for a good set of references ($25 for the Miller Student Pack, and $25 for the Lincoln "Principles of Arc Welding)Have a great day.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.

Reply:You might also look into the Atomic Hydrogen Welding (AHW) process as an example of H2 being used as a weld gas.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_hydrogen_weldingIn this process an electric arc between two non-consumed electrodes is passed through a stream of molecular hydrogen (h2), dissociating it into atomic hydrogen (hydrogen radicals, H[dot], if I understand correctly). Dissociating molecular hydrogen requires a lot of energy, which is released when two hydrogen atoms recombine into a hydrogen molecule. My understanding is that metal surfaces catalyze this recombination reaction, so that most of the heat of recombination is deposited on the workpiece. The hydrogen acts as a shielding gas as well. The metal workpiece is not part of the arc circuit. Neat, eh?.p
Reply:Sundown, You mean welding actually existed before the internet????? And people actually recorded things on paper in whats called a "book" ???? Gee I always thought that people just guessed and no real science type work was EVER done before the internet! The next thing your going to tell me is that Lincoln didnt invent the Tig machine, and that airplanes are welded with a torch! Such Foolishness  Common guys, oxy hydrogen is the oldest non-pressure welding process and dates back to the early 1800's for welding precious metals like gold and platinum.....yes they had platinum then too....amazing huh? I will say one thing , the internet has made information available, unfortunately its not anywhere near complete information, and people mistake it for such.
Reply:Makoman,Yepper.Them dang books have got some good info.In fact, there may even be a resurgence in reading books.  Seems that a new one just hit the Best Sellers list."How to Appear Really Stupid on the Internet, In as Few Words as Possible".Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
