Hi everyone.I do a lot of weight training, i actually train at home.I have bought all the mild steel needed for this project... i have bought 50x50x5mm box section, which is plenty strong/big enough for the project. Obviously, the quality of the weld is going to dictate how strong it is, etc...Thing is, i have approached local welders to weld the actual sections together, but no one wants to do it, they say they dont have the time, and obviously are prioritising their bigger jobs, which is fair, but i still need to get this project made.I cant weld, i want to learn how to, but there are no courses locally it seems.Any input would be great, into how difficult it would be.Reply With Quote
Reply:Where are you located?  That will determine who's interested in doing the job.  Travel or shipping costs will kill this job quickly.Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE
Reply:heck...go get an 89$ flux core welder from Harbor Freight and a little scrap metal and you'll be in business in no time!
Reply:Might want to approach the teacher and students at your local technical high school or trade school. Not to complicated and will save you a bundle. good luck."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
Reply:Thanks everyone - i am from England. As far as i know - welding is not something which is done in schools - not as far as i know anyway. With the pulleys - is it worth putting them into the actual box section - or welding some plates to the box section - which will then house the pulleys via a bolt?
Reply:Didn't realize your across the pond, as far as the pulleys in production it saves them a step as far as material and welding, if you have the equipment to cut out and fit them in, by all means. good luck."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
Reply:I've built some weight training equipment and I might recommend making it so that it bolts together. Moving large pieces of metal around and out of a house when you move is really dangerous. When I design my equipment, I always design it so that it can be bolted so that in case I need to move it, I can. You can learn to weld and this would be a good project. Seeing how you are in England, you probably have access to Clarke welders. They are pretty popular in Europe and have some users here in the US although recently the Clarke welders are hard to get parts for here in the US because the company that distributed them here went bankrupt.. They are less expensive than a Miller, Hobart or Lincoln but they are pretty usable. Get a  mig welder that you can use in the future as you may find you like welding.Make sure you practice welding before you start on your project and you will do just fine.
