Go easy here   First time TIG welding in 2 years and my first time with a foot pedal.Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIAir Cooled CK Torch w/gas lense and pyrex cup1/8" red tungsten200amps100% Argon at 15CFM3/32 RG60 fillerHere's the pics:So, definitely not Zapster quality TIG welds, but I think they'll hold.  Let me know what you think.Last edited by wintermute; 12-01-2010 at 01:25 AM."No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow
Reply:Wow winter, that is some thick bar stock. I just noticed you plug welded the bottom.  That's smart - will definitely make it stronger.   Curious if you used RG60 just because that's what you had, or was there some other particular reason?  It's probably quite ductile.  Is it for automotive/truck leaf spring suspension?
Reply:Thanks jakeru.  I used RG60 just cause it's what I had around.  These are actually the shackle mounts for the front bumper of my truck.  They hold 5/8" shackles which are used for anything from towing to tie-down to removing tree stumps...basically anything where I need to attach a cable or anything to the front of the truck.--Wintermute"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow
Reply:They look nice. Post a picture of them on the truck.

Reply:5/8" ???? If you're going to use them for recovery or towing, I'd step up to a 3/4" shackle...I use 5/8" for overhead rigging, but for recovery the forces are alot higher. Good looking welds!-Millermatic 211, Powermax 380, and way too many other tools to list....-Unofficial, professsional, garage tinkerer...
Reply:I figured it'd hold up to whatever I expect to do with it...they have a 6,500lb working load limit...also, I figure if they break, I'll just make a new set of shackle mounts using 7/8" shackles (I have a set of those sitting in the garage.  I didn't use them on this since I just didn't want to make the shackle mounts that big initially.  Since the 7/8" shackles have a 1" diameter pin, I figured it'd force me to make the mounts just friggin' huge Thanks for the compliment on the welds, I appreciate it --Wintermute"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow

Reply:Yup, pickup truck, 1967 Jeep-Kaiser M715 5/4 Ton (military as well...but not nearly as big as a deuce).--Wintermute"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow
Reply:btw, here's some pictures of the truck they'll be mounted on...I'm still in progress of replacing the front bumper you see in the pictures here.  Once that's done I'll have some pictures of the new one and the shackle blocks mounted to it.--Wintermute"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow
Reply:Pure awesomeness! I like the numbers on the roof. Never going to get lost from the air Are you going to keep it red or repaint it green?
Reply:I'll probably repaint it green .  The red isn't bad, but it needs to be stripped and re-painted anyways, so I figured I'd go with something a bit more towards the original military coloring.--Wintermute"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow
