I have been busy, for some time, and haven't been able to post.  So here is another one.Ever since I built my bed and boxes, I wished that I would have put an "X" in the top of my tool box lids.  I have, also learned, that most helpers can't hang on to the lids, when the wind blows. After fixing the lids, a few times, I have decided to fix the wind blow problem (with a trampoline spring), and to hammer in an "X."  The "X" puts some rigidity in the lid, and I think it makes it look better. The Pics show how I laid out an "X" and then used a couple of different hammers and a chisel, (that I took a grinder to).  I took the sharp edge off and rounded it, instead. One of the pics show how the "X" is on one side of the panel, but not on the other.  I had to make up a hitting sequence, so the the center was higher than the rest of the lid.I should have used a brake, before I welded them up.  This is the first time I have done this with a couple of hammers and chisel. This link shows what the lids looked like before the "X."http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...olishing+metalLet me know what you think.-Rhyno Attached ImagesLast edited by Rhyno; 10-17-2010 at 05:04 PM.07 Fowler 200D65 RedFace04 Miller TB 302, 22hpMiller 12RCMiller HF 251-1Lincoln SP135HyperTherm PM 380and a few others... Reply:That turned out nice, but how did it make you feel to have to take a hammer and chisel to "Old Glory"?

Reply:great work cant realy see how you did the hinge
Reply:it caves in due to people sitting on it, if you put steel spikes on top it would keep people from sitting on it....
Reply:Although my toolbox isn't anywhere near as nice as that, I did something similar to your spring.I used a length of chain to set the amount I wanted the lid to open, and a spring from a storm door.  The advantage of that type of spring, is that the spring cannot be pulled apart from the wind.A toolbox as nice as yours deserves gas struts on the lid.  :-)Oh, and I've seen another way to replicate that effect which could be a little easier than using a chisel to chase that line into the steel.Lay a rod underneath the steel, and beat the sheet over the rod, with a soft mallet. Reply:I've never seen a trampoline spring used that way. Thats really cool. I had a particularly smart helper tell me after we got into the truck one day that the lid on my top box wouldn't close so he had to jump on it  I even had my beveler in there so it was lucky that it didn't get wrecked. Gotta keep a close eye on these guys I tell ya.
