Reply:Has anyone tried this machine. I got a price of $280, about a third of the price of a Lincoln Invertec 155 or Miller Maxstar 150. Thremodyne makes good equipment, but there is just something about a China made machine that bothers me.
Reply:My Thermal Arc was made in Japan, according to the label on back of the machine.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:how does it run, I'm looking to weld 8" I-beams. 90-95 amps should handle 3/32 7018 with no problems. Have you had any issues with your Thermal Arc?
Reply:I have the Arc Master 185 ACDC tig machine.  It has had not one single issue with it since I bought it in 2005 as a 2006 model.   I don't use it for stick, just ac and dc tig.   I'm not all that fond of how it runs a 7018, the arc is a little stiff.   I prefer my XMT, PowCon or Bobcat for stick over the Thermal Arc.   However, the machine you're looking at is not the same machine I have, so quite possibly it will weld differently than mine does.Welding 8" I-beams with 3/32 7018, you're going to be on those welds for quite awhile, alotta passes.   Also, you don't have much juice for root penetration with such a small machine and small rod on those thick beams.   You'll want to do bevel prep on all joints and put in the roots with some 1/8" 6010/6011 before hitting it with the 7018.I don't know what the duty cycle on it is but I would guess probly not alot.   I would choose a higher output and higher duty cycle machine so you can run at least 1/8 or 5/32 rods.  An XMT or CST280 or Maxstar 200STR or Thunderbolt XL or even a Maxstar 150S would be a better choice for structural work than a 95 amp machine.   If you can't afford to buy a bigger machine, I suggest renting an XMT or an engine drive, like a Bobcat, to get the work done. What part of the country are you in?Last edited by DesertRider33; 08-30-2009 at 11:52 AM.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
