Since it's like an initiation, here's my welding cart.  Nothing to write home about.  Lots of mistakes, lots of learning for the next one.  The shelves aren't 100% done, boards are not the right size.  My fault for trusting the tag on the shelf to be 12" wide but came home with 9" -  1"x1"x1/8" angle iron-  casters, 100lb -  board-  tube for handle, old door frame pull up bar-  WeldPak HD w/.035" fluxcoreThe ideaBase built first, coped the joints. Then put the legs on.  Most crucial mistake I made was here.  I should have made the legs and sides flush with each other.  Oh well, noted.  I need work on holding the gun at the right angle doing these fillet welds.  I'd run the puddle over the vertical edge instead of lower in the joint.Putting the handle on was a mess.  Which is a shame because I got it cut and notched in no time.  I forgot to adjust the settings and ended up blowing through the tube.  Then I tried to fix the holes.  I had a lot to clean up.  Let's just leave it at that.  No pics of welding the casters on but that went fine (the welding part).  Here I made another crucial mistake when I didn't space the rear wheels outside the frame of the cart.  Now its unstable.  Afraid to topple over the machine I put the welder on the bottom shelf but didn't like it because I can't open the door.  The whole point of the angle top shelf is for ease of using the machine when standing up.  I did find that if I put some weight on the bottom shelf it keeps the cart stable.  So, I'll keep my toolbox there.  Might throw a plate on the bottom shelf instead of wood if I run across something.  The middle shelf will be for my gloves and hood.I did rush to get it done and painted and I skipped on cable hooks.  I'm positive I'll regret that and I plan on adding them later. The resultI'll take the stuff off, pull it out for a better pic when I put the final shelf boards on.I learned:- how to cope angle iron joints- to account for center of gravity when placing wheels- don't forget to adjust settings for different material thickness- build component with sizes of materials in mind, metal or wood (ex. build shelves to 12" inside measure to easily fit a 12" wide board cut to length).  Makes for less work when fitting- welding fluxcore on swivel casters muffs up the ball bearings- welding is more grinding than weldingPractical application is invaluable.Lincoln AC225 and CartLincoln WeldPak HD and CartOne hand

Reply:Well I`ll offer my 2 cents. I would cut off the rear casters weld on a bolt and put outboard tires (non flats). that would make it more stable, easier to roll over floor cracks & take outside and create another project... grin... but seriously next one make it wider at the bottom and tapering. Reply:to me one of the best things about steel and welding is if its wrong you can always fix it. for years i worked in wood and once you've cut it its done. the best thing about doing stuff is learning whats wrong and how to do it better.

Reply:Good job Monica!!!Nice thing about paint is you can sand it off easy, add accessories, and repaint. Now had you powder coated it...........If your going to widen one set of casters, widen the front ones. Everyone, at some point, pulls there cart by the gun cable and wider in the front will make it less tipsy.200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.

Reply:Cleaned up and welded the cable hook on the cart while waiting for the pizza guy.  I didn't have a ton of room to weld this on the edge of the leg so I thought I'd goof around with plug welds.  I was a bit hesitant because I am using fluxcore.  I read the slag can get trapped in there.  I decided to go ahead since the cable hook isn't an important part of the structure and I thought it'd be fun to try out.I think I left the welds a little short.  I started on the top two holes and got better on the last two.  I read they need to be convex and there you see they're concave.  Figured leave them be and now I know to go a little longer.  The dimples will be a reminder. Reply:Sweet!  Nice cart job Monica.   Plug welds look good too.  I see you drew up plans and everything.  I can't seem to do that.  Just measure, cut and weld as I go.  Could be why I often wish I had done something in a different fashion. Which reminds me.  As for learning, a friend of mine once asked me what I was thinking as I was looking intently at a project I had just completed.  With a slight disapointment in my voice I told him, if I could do it over I'd do thus and such. . . at which he replied "If you look at something you've done and can't find something you'd do differently or better next time then you're not trying to improve.".  Wise words. For casters on a future project, you may want to consider welding bolts to the bottom of the structure so the caster can be removable in the event one needs to be changed down the road at some point.  The inside bolt hole can be used to secure the bottom shelf in place.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:HI MonicaAnother way to mount the casters is to plug weld the bolt holes only.  That holds great and if you need to remove later just use a cutoff wheel. And cut the inside part of the caster near the plug weld grind and reweld new ones.  A full welded caster base may put too much heat on the bearing grease and melt it out.We all do it differently thats what makes it fun all of us learn from others.  I have a disk folder full of things I've found on the web that I want to build.  You have the tools and the interest keep on truckin girl.have funTom Attached Images

Reply:Another comment on the casters---Dont overweld, like has been mentioned....you welded all the way around; way overkill---You can wrap the corners a little and be ok, dont need to, What I do is keep the welds in line with each other so if I need to change out a caster, all I have to do is grind one side and then hammer the caster(junk anyway, right) sideways to break the little 1/2" welds on the other side....less grinding, Tim happyNice job, overall...

Reply:I like to plug weld the bolt holes and then just drill them if they need to be replaced.  Or if you want to steal the casters for another project, drilling the plug welds won't hurt them.My name's not Jim....
Reply:So what you guys are saying is these casters are pretty much committed to this cart now?   Well, no worries I guess.  Thanks for the ideas on attaching them for next time.  I appreciate the comments yall Someone mentioned heating the bearings...that did happen.  Luckily they still roll around.  I regreased them with the grease gun & needle and worked them around.  We'll see how they go.duane55, I'm anal about having a plan for a project.  If I can't see it on paper, I can't see it in materials.  I'm one of those uncreative souls and I need structure Vernon, there won't be a bottle with this welder.  I'm glad you asked as I had thought about it when I was drawing plans and decided to keep it as FC only.  (It's also unclear if I can do a MIG conversion on it.)  I figured I would eventually grow into a nice 220v MIG machine and keep this separate.Lincoln AC225 and CartLincoln WeldPak HD and CartOne hand

Reply:Hi Monica(I'm one of those uncreative souls)  Not a true statement!!If you draw up your own plans or read other’s that’s creative. As you make/build anything there is a level of creativity. Your structure is following the plans. The ones that are not creative buy everything. If your welder had a gas feature there should be a place inside where you switch the leads polarity and then you can use normal Mig wire.Have funTom
