we have a 200 gallon propane tank and a 22 gallon propane tank (they refuse to refill).... the plan is to create a smoker/BBQ out of them mounted on a small trailer.. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xggOpurnsB0[/ame] something a little like that. but not as big and fancy ill have a few questions down the road I'm sure but the main one at the moment is does any one know the mathematics to joining one tank to another (cutting only one open)  on the side... and i know you should fill it with water before cutting it but how full cutting the door and other tank with water behind the cut seems like a mess (in a garage with no drain in the winter) but if that's what needs to be done then that's what will be done.. pics will be posted later on as well... feel free to suggest things
Reply:Well, that just got me fully motivated.  I just happen to be going out right now to light my smoker.  I have a boston butt and 4 full racks of ribs...And am building another smoker on a trailer right now for resale. In fact the trailer version of mine looks just like the one you posted almost with the chamber turned crossways over the wheels and the fire box to the front, so you can stand in front. Here's another I finished earlier this year: Small fire box is at customer's request, but it worked just fine for even 225 degree smoking. Reply:Keep us posted on the progress Ssleven, would love to see what you come up with. Here is a picture of a BBQ I'm working on for a friend. He comes from a large Greek family and I guess they roast alot of lamb. The size is 30" x 72" and has 2 spits, the back on is vertically adjustable. You can see more details of it here;http://gordsgarage.wordpress.com/Gordhttp://gordsgarage.wordpress.com/
Reply:There are several options for cutting these tanks.  First thing is to remove all the regulators and all that other crap from them.  Most people fill the tanks full with water and some soap, as this will help to remove the stink from the tank and displace all the volume that the propane gas could be taking up.  The soap is supposed to help with the chemical that makes the gas smell.  You can then drain the tank.At this point you have several options.1)just cut it2)have some water in it (about 1/4 full) and get some dry ice and keep adding it to the tank until the co2 starts billowing out of the top.  then its safe to cut since all the o2 and propane has been displaced3)purge the empty tank with co2 from a cylinder and cut it.
