Hi allLong time lurker, infrequent poster. Anyway, I live in mid north Ontario Canada and there's no vocational school or community college where I could take an evening MIG course. I've been running some pretty good beads, and have a solid few years of MIG experience, along with a lot of OA experience. Anyway, I'd like to take some further training, primarily in MIG, and am considering the MIG course that's offered at the LIncoln Electric school in Cleveland. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with this course, thoughts, comments etc. I like that it is offered very hands on and is a week long. I realize you can't learn the same amount of information in a week that you could in a full time course but I simply can't take full time, nor can I drive 1 day a week the distance I'd need to to get to a night-time course. Any thoughts or info would really be appreciated. On the odd chance that someone knows about something similar in Ontario Canada,...I'm all ears!!
Reply:In my opinion Mig is the easiest process to learn! I would think your money would be better spent on a SMAW, and GTAW course. Once you get those two processes down Mig will follow with no trouble.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:I have a young buddy that i'm trying to convince to go there while he's still living rent free. I think he's afraid to go by himself. Iv'e searched there website, but not quite sure if you get any legit certs out of the school. Does anybody know for sure? The coarse he's thinking about is the six or seven month one that goes through everything.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:I took their FCAW course about 10 years ago and would definately recommend it.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:Take the class. You won't get good enough in one week to get any kind of cert, unless you think you are that good going in.  The six week basic SMAW class does offer the option of a D1.1 cert during the final week.  However in that week you will get all the theory you will ever need about transfer modes, process selection and filler metals.  The folks at Lincoln Electric make the consumables, machines, and a lot of the literature that's out there.  But the best reason to take the class is you get a purchase certificate that is valid for two years and is good for one order of equipment.  Not one machine, one order.  So find a buddy or two wanting some gear and pay for the class that way.  Or like I did, take the $500 GTAW class and save $1200 on the welder.Weldermike:  Your buddy should be able to get D1.1 all position, unlimited thickness in SMAW and possibly FCAW.  During the pipe portion of the class you get certified (if you have the skills) to either API 1104 or ASME codes.  Other than that, they can probably certify you to just about any code or process, but you have to supply the material/coupons.Last edited by bebo; 08-27-2012 at 03:02 PM.

Reply:If you're lucky, those certs may get you in the door. But you will still have to take your prospective employer's tests.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:It's a paper work world. Some white collar people get off on paper work. But as you know very well Mike, sooner or later you have to be able to prove what you can do.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Very true bud! Reason i'm pushing this kid is he is my friend, I know he has great hands, but he is working for a welding company for about a year now, and beings that he is so young, and the company is fairly large he gets no hood time. I have actually watched him go backwards with his skills in the past year, and he's working like an animal for a 19 yr old kid. Nights, weekends, whole nine yrds. I wanna see him better himself, but I can only show him so much in the little b/s sidework we do together. I don't wanna see him become a wasted talent, thats why I would rather him go to school while he's still living with grandma. One good girlfriend  at that age, could blow the whole deal!I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
