I am welding a Ss coupled to a Ss beer keg to install a ball valve. First I drill a hole then put the fitting through. I will weld from the front first. Can I use a heat sink putty behind the weld to avoid the need for backpurging? Reply:I doubt it would help. How would you get the putty in there? Have you looked into solar flux? Purging this would be pretty easy, it could be done without a special purge line. Just stick the torch in the hole, fill up the space, a put a stopper in the coupler.Ian TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools

Reply:Get a cheap roll of aluminum foil. Place several strips over the top, to encolose it. Use painters tape to hold the foil down around the edges of the keg. Stab a little hole in the foil top, tape your argon purge hose so it doesn't flip out, or have someone hold it for you. OH , tape over your pipe with a small vent hole.
Reply:[email protected] Flux works, but it doesn't produce the back-bead quality of backpurging. It produces a clean, but erratic bead profile, so the heat sintered flux can be tenacious to remove.  This a result of the 'tooth' of the bead.     I priced a one lbs. can four months ago, and it was $67.00, I promptlyfound my lost can.  It also prefers to be mixed with methanol-alcohol, sothat's another $12.00.I much prefer back-purging regardless of the work it takes to produce aserviceable air-dam.  I only used Solar FLux if it 'just has to be welded'.Opus
Reply:I always wonder if you could grind up some clay into a paste with water (say, Bentonite kitty litter), smear it on, let it dry and weld.  Or a ceramic slurry of some sort."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder

Reply:If you have access to the bottom, you don't need to purge it. Just weld both sides. Be carefull not to burn through. Even if you do burn through, you can always grind off the sugar. Set the end of the coupler flush to the surface so you can get to the inside for any clean up there.Ian TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools
