Was watching a YouTube video of someone doing it. He took a bunch of wire from the spool and put one side in a vice and the other side in a drill, then spun the wire. Seems like a cheaper option?[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hi1a9Ko_wc[/ame]
Reply:Tig rod isn't any more expensive than mig wire by the pound. I'm sure it would work, but I wouldn't bother, unless I was in a bind for filler wire.
Reply:I was working on a weathering steel piece. When I did the first one I didn't have a TIG, hence the spool. Started a new piece and didn't feel like MIGing it. Also makes a short video to post up.And yes, that is me...Last edited by kevinacaron; 08-31-2012 at 11:24 PM.From the desk of Kevin CaronTrying to be the best me I can!www.kevincaron.comAHP Alpha Tig 200x MillerMatic 251Miller Syncrowave 200
Reply:Awesome . You notice any difference in the welds? straight rod versus the spun spool rod?
Reply:I have used heavy sub arc wire (3/32) ... I haven't found an easy way to straighten. I think there is a trick with a bent tube rotating as you pull wire through but it has not worked for me.

Reply:I often use wire from the spools, especialy for thin stuff, because my lws have only 1,6mm filler rod an up...
Reply:Hmmmm, winding with a drill, that solves my problem of utilising a couple of spools of 309 stainless and some stellite wire I bought at auction cheap....gonna use them for my plasma welder set-up, but I'll wind the wire into 1/4" rods for the filler, 'cos the plasma welder eats filler.Ian. |
