Are welds malleable? I used 6011 to put some plates together. One of my end plates bowed up. I really want to avoid cutting. I was hoping to be able to heat the crap out of the weld and bash it in place with a big hammer. Will this work or will it just bust the weld? I don't have a torch right now. A oxy fuel torch is on the list. I may be able to barrow one if I need to. I do have one of those heating torches that screws onto a small propane cylinder. But I don't know if that will get hot enough. Worst case I can just set it aside until I get a torch.
Reply:Maybe. Welds can be harder, softer or identical to the base metal, depending on the base metal, type of filler and method of welding, cooling rate and so on. I have no idea what 6011 is (I only O/A weld and the american rod numbers don't seem to be used here anyway) but I would expect most welds to be workable when heated red hot, and quite a few of them to a more limited extent when cold. I'm sure a bunch of experts will share their knowlege here soon. |
