I am a Sheet Metal apprentice and am currently in a welding class through the union. I know I can get my sheet metal certs there but not structural. The job I am on needs some supports welded and we are having trouble finding guys with certs (7018 & 232).What are the certs. I would need that would allow me to weld 1/4"-3/8" with these 2 processes ? I have experience with 7018 on 1" plate but not 232. Can you guys help me out ? Where can I get more info ?Thanks ,Rich

Reply:what dessertrider33 said+the 3/8" plate test is good for up to 3/4" plate (i think)the 1" plate test is good for unlimited thickness.G

Reply:Local 104 , SF Bay Area. It seems like the guys with welding certs. almost always stay working. Another feather in the cap type of thing. Overall though work is REALLY slow .
Reply:i will tell you here in the bay area I personally haven't burned a single stick electrode in a structural welding job in over 15 years. im not saying NO one stick welds around here but i am saying i haven't seen anyone. it's pretty much ALL NR-232, NR-233, or Coreshield 8 Your going to want to find a veteran NR-232 welder to teach you the ropes. Its VERY hard to just get the hang of trying it yourself. Its unlike any other electrode out there.IF you really want to be top dog pursue getting certified to the new AWS D1.8 otherwise AWS D1.1 G4 is considered more than sufficient. I welded for years with G3 papers and i rarely had issue with work i couldn't do.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches. |
