I do not care for the electrode holder on the 120v clarke welder that I recently bought. I wolud like to replace it with something that is more substantial. Tractor Supply has one that is rated for 200 amps, which is way more horsepower than this machine puts out. Will a larger holder work on a machine like this?
Reply:You can run any size stinger you want. A run of the mill tweco 200 is the most common. There is spring loaded clamp style, and a type that screws down to lock the rod in position. If the 200a tweco feels to big, I have a Miller stinger that came on my contactor kit that is smaller you can have for a few bucks. Reply:Don't know where you are ,but harbor freight has small stingers cheap. The Jackson is nice and so is the Tweco. you gotta grab it and see how it feels. Everyone has a opinion and they all will work for you. A lot of the machines at work have HUGE 600 amp stingers. So, you buy what you like, add 8' of lightweight cable, and a lug on the opposite end. Now, you just open the existing stinger and stick the lug in where the rod would go.A welding supplier will make this up for you and you just added a little more lead .http://www.harborfreight.com/200-amp...3-001b2166becchttp://store.cyberweld.com/elhol200amp.htmlhttp://www.harrisweldingsupplies.com...de-holder.aspx

Reply:If you are hobby welding, try a Bernard twist lock style stinger. The only real disadvantage to them is that it takes a little longer to put in a new rod. but they are much more compact.Tiger Sales: AHP Distributor www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P, Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma. Reply:Put a quick connect on the line and get a clamp style and a twist lock. The twist lock comes in handy for tight spots.
Reply:Thanks for the replies. The current stinger works fine but as BD1 points out, it's a matter of feel. The stingers on the few larger welders I have used are simply more comfortable for me to use.
Reply:John,I would be interested in purchasing the stinger you mentioned for my Maxstar 150 STH. Let me know. Thanks,Nick

Reply:I have tried 3 different types of stingers: the cheapo that came with the welder, a 200A and a 400A. Ironically, the heavier 400A stinger was more comfortable and easier to control than the others. I guess the added mass keeps it from waving around as much...who knows?I like the clamp type instead of twist-lock type...easier to release a stuck rod. |
