Hi Guys:I'm a Retired Electrician / Gunsmith I have a Miller Syncrowave 180D welder.I'm a Hobbyist I all ways building something out of metal.I would like to get a Plasma cutter. 2 of my local welding shops Miller- Lincoln have then from $1200.00 to $1500.00 price range. When I look on E-bay I see all these Inverter type at Half the cost. Can some one give me some direction on these different units. Thanks
Reply:From my personal, but limited, experience with Plasma Cutters, the one to have is a Hypertherm. Their over the telephone technical support has saved my bacon more than a few times.I offer three choices: Good, Fast, & Cheap. You may pick two.Hobart AC/DC StikMate LXHarbor Freight AD HoodHarbor Freight Industrial Chop SawDeVilbis 20 Gallon, 5 HP Compressor
Reply:Guess it depends on what you want to cut. Hyperthem is the way to go, but they are not cheap.I can tell you my Hobart is a inverter and weighs about 40 pounds less than the non inverter machine I had before.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer

Reply:The Ebay ones that are "half the cost" are Chinese garbage and will cost you a lot more in the long run. The Hypertherm Powermax 30 or 45 are the ones that you want. Miller and Lincoln make very good welders but for plasma cutters it's better to go with a company that makes nothing else, IMHO.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:ESAB also make good machines. Thermal Dynamics have good machines too but a lot of their stuff in Made in China now..Tiger Sales: AHP Distributor www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P, Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma. Reply:Here is what you want:http://www.hypertherm.com/en-us/Prod...powermax30.jspGreat machine. I paid $1000 about a year ago. I was told the Miller plasma's were made by Hypertherm but they aren't as good.kidtigger24 They think Im crazy, but I know better. It is not I who am crazy. It is I who am MAD!

Reply:Miller plasma's used Hypertherm torches (with different consumables) up until about a year ago. The Miller torches today are sourced mostly offshore...as I understand it.....probably a way to save money. The Hypertherm systems are all made in the USA.....torches included, by employee owners of Hypertherm. They are competitively priced, and generally outperform the major competitors in terms of consumable life (this makes them lower cost over time), cut quality and reliability.I may be considered biased...as a 35 year employee of Hypertherm...but search the web, there are great prices and great feedback from Hypertherm users.Toymvr....you don't mention what you plan to cut? The little Powermax30 does a great job day to day up through 1/4" (can cut 3/8" well, and can sever 1/2"), runs on either 120volt or 240 volt, and is priced at under about $1200....I have seen them for $1000 online. The Powermax45 is the next one up...a lot more power, can cut 1/2" all day and severs 1", 240 volt only.Jim Colt
Reply:Esab air plasma's are made in Poland now. Love the torches on them, Build quality is excellent. My experience with the new machines, is they have a awesome arc, and consumable life is excellent. You will not find consumables as easy as a Hypertherm, or Thermal dynamics, but the cut quality is more then a match. They all bring something a bit different to the ballgame, and I would probably stick with those three. Not sure of the new Lincoln or Miller stuff, because I have not used their latest machines. Probably real nice too. If you stayed with those five brands, you will be ok..I tried those first three out, and knew what what would work for me best.Esab/Lorch ET-220iEsab 160i caddyThermal LM-200 Lincoln feedersThermal Pee-Wee 85sThermal 60i- 3phase /RPC powered (Beast)Thermal Drag-gun 35CINE 1500 Klutch 140i
Reply:I got a Hypertherm powermax 30 a couple of months ago, I tried the harbor freight & a Hobart Airforce but did not like them as well.

Reply:Thanks from all of the employee-owners of Hypertherm for buying your American built Powermax30! All of us will do what it takes to ensure you are happy with its performance for many years. I have a 30 in my home shop (as well as a Powermax1000, Powermax45 and a Powermax85)....it is the first torch I grab for probably 90% of the work I do when cutting by hand. It is small, the torch has great visibility....and I use it for a lot of tube, pipe and angle iron cut to length needs.....I rarely use my horizontal band saw...too slow!Jim Colt Originally Posted by toymvrThanks guys I ordered a Hypertherm Powermax 30 Building America Edition - (088064) from Baker's welding. with free consumable Kit $1220http://www.bakersgas.com/HYP088064.html |
