When tig welding, and i touch the tip to my peice, then go to sharpen it(2% thoriated), im not putting myself at risk by possibly breathing it in, right?
Reply:You should wear a respirator when welding and or grinding.

Reply:Are you holding your breath while sharpening?Lincoln SA200's... at least 15 - 20. They come and go. Growing partial to the "Short Hoods" in my old age. Last count on Short Hoods was 13 in possession.
Reply:Well i knew ingesting it would be bad, but i wasnt really thinking about it today when grinding... so no, i did not hold my breath.
Reply:The hazard is slight, but I always wear a respirator when grinding red tungsten. A grinder with a dust collector would be a good idea if you do a lot of it.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps

Reply:Their is a very slight radiation risk, it wont penetrate your skin, but if its internal it "might" cause a problem. The stuff has been around for decades used every day and there really hasnt been any problems that they could peg on thoriated tungsten. I would still wear a respirator, or get some lanthalated or ceriated tungsten. |
