ok  i know why flux core has flux and why you use argon with a solid core wire on mild steel, it keeps the arc protected from the ambient air, what happens to the weld when using solid wire and you run out of gas???
Reply:Depends who you are and where you are at
Reply:With solid wire and no shielding gas the nitrogen and oxygen in the atmospheric air will cause a brittle porous weld.
Reply:Yes, you transition from a very smooth bead surface to an extremely porous one that looks like burnt cheese. It's a really good idea to check your gas supply before starting a critical weld.XMT304 (school)SP125+ (home)HF 4x6 BandsawGood judgement comes from experience and much of that comes from bad judgement.
Reply:Thanks for the info on that guys, i was curious about that i know it would have a visual effect on the weld, but i wanted to know how it would effect the strength of the weld im welding with lincoln innersheild flux wire and. Lincoln pro mig 140 i havent gotten an argon tank yet and wanted know what to look for when the gas runs out.
