Hi all,I have a project in the works welding on a magnesium transmission housing. Problem is that I only need about 1/2 lb. of rod and all the welding suppliers require a one pound minimum order. The price I got was $100 a pound.Anyone have an idea of a source for a 1/2 dozen or so of some 1/8" mag tig rod? Thanks,Tony
Reply:try weldingsupply.com I have got my rod from them at good prices. They list Magnesium at $72/lb in a 3lb lot. but I would call them and see if you can buy 1/2 lb. https://weldingsupply.securesites.ne...EF787343::::PEpost up if u have any luck with themTiger Sales: AHP Distributor www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P, Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma. Reply:I was in the same situation as you awhile back with a transmission housing, and had to bite the bullet and buy a full pound of AZ92 magnesium rod. I couldn't find anyone local that had a smaller quantity. Got it in 3/32" and I think I paid $130+ for that pound.
Reply:Have any left??
Reply:You're not going to find any cheap wrought magnesium alloys & the sh!t solidifies too fast to shoot or cast small rods...The neighbor needed some a year or 2 ago I I told him he may have more luck searching for a 1lb spool of wire. I also mentioned that any leftover wouldn't get lost in the odd mix of fillers he has on the bench. I think he was in the $90 range then. For shooting the stuff for parts or tire rims the (about double) cost of the casting alloy is made up for by the double speed of setting and triple life of the molds & tooling.Good luckMatt
Reply:Just knuckle down and spend the $100 and get the 1lb. Charge your customer for it. If he don't pay, you don't play.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:Yeah,if that's my only option, so be it.Thanks,Tony
Reply:Hello fellas (and any ladies lurking),I have run out of options here. The minimum order for this stuff from site southpaw referred me to is 3 pounds at $217 plus shipping. It comes directly from the manufacturer and is drop shipped to the client. My local supplier said their minimum order is 10 pounds!!!My local welding supplier said he inquired about it for me with their in house "guru" and he said the reason places don't stock this stuff is because it oxidizes almost immediately and when they used to stock it, prior to selling to a customer, they would have to break open the package and clean each rod with stainless wool, too time consuming to make it worthwhile.I think I will post an add on craigslist to see if someone out there has it they would sell to me. Any other ideas?I think I will also post an add in the classified section under wanted, to see if someone may have some. Thanks,TonyLast edited by therrera; 09-26-2012 at 02:02 PM.Reason: to add detail
Reply:McMaster Carr will sell you a 1/2 pound but it will cost you $81.60 plus shipping.http://www.mcmaster.com/#tig-welding-rods/=jgnjko
Reply:Thanks for the info. I was waiting for the client's deposit so I could order some from them and the job was cancelled. Oh well....at least now I know where to get small quantities of the stuff for when I need it. I ran two craigslist ads to try and see if someone out there had some they could sell me, no responses. Thanks,Tony |
