Like I said I have know idea what I'm doing when it comes to welding , so after lurking (I think) I have decided on my first welder. The HH Handler 140 seems a good choice. I'm also working a deal (barter) with a coworker for a linoln 225 ac/dc for the heavier stuff. I also have already traded for a brand new victor cutskill torch set. And I have my tanks. What I would like to build right now are of course my cart & tables. Which I understand to be my own right of passage. And will help me get a grip on my welders. The main things I want to build right now are some bbq smokers, and some shop tools. I would like to someday maybe able to do my own trailer/smokers but I do realize the dangers there,so I'll stick with bought trailers for now.Now for me I really can't afford a school. I do have a metal shop/fab shop up the street & the owner is a nice guy and has been real helpfull so far. I just don't want to wear out my welcome. So with all your help I hope to go to school right here & there. So what kinda metal uses What rods? & what do you think of hobart 140 wire welder? And can a newbei start with torch? Well like I said some times I'm long winded. But just want you to get the right pic. Thanks for any advice. And maybe point me to other threads that would be helpfull for new guys and the million questions we prob should ask but don't know to.  Thanks again ahead of time.
Reply:the mig is fine for the light stuff. everyone has to learn somewhere. no reason you couldn't learn on O/A. I know my highschool class tought stick and O/A to first time welders.Definately don't want to use the mig on trailer structure. but for barrel smokers/bbq's and small tables you should be fine. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:Thanks. Does anyone have a link that shows a conversion chart that has metal thickness like 1/4 to the gauge it is concidered? And excetra gauges.
