I came across a package of 1/8th tig rod being thrown out at work, can I use this filler for O/A welding?

Reply:Hello spanico, the tig rod is somewhat different than a true O/A rod. The O/A and Tig applications are different in the types of oxidizers and other alloying elements that are in them as well as the strength of the rods in general. If the Tig rod is an ER70 S-3 or something similar to that it is roughly in the 70,000lb tensile strength area. The majority of the gas welding rods are classed as RG45 or possibly RG60, hence their tensiles are either 45,000 or 60,000 respectively. Sometimes when you try to gas weld with a rod that is designed for Tig welding you will see an orange scum floating on the surface of the weld puddle, this will differ from a gas welding rod that will likely provide a very clear weld pool with well defined edges upon completion of the weld. Tig welding with a gas welding rod can yield some detrimental results as well, you can possibly end up with a considerable amount of porosity in the finished weld bead due to some of the reactive elements in the gas welding filler metal. Do folks gas weld with Tig rod? Certainly, when the rod is free and your welds aren't necessarily requiring code compliance free is a very good price. I do suggest that you give this rod a try, your personal experiences with it might be just fine for your intended purpose and you will find out soon enough when you put it to use. Good luck and regards, Allanaevald |
