Reply:The bottom one looks pretty good from the middle to the right, the start looks like a little too slow travel speed. Just a note, instead of posting a new thread ever day you can just reply in your current thread.Keep it up!Ryan_______________________OF COURSE I DON'T LOOK BUSY... I DID IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME
Reply:If you want to you could draw two parallel lines with a ruler and soapstone that are say 5/8" apart and if you have a clean welding lens try to keep the edges of your puddle just flowing to the line. This will help you make a nice even bead. After you get that down pat it will become second nature.I think I would run a little bit hotter to but thats just me.Good luck and keep burnin them rods
Reply:Now you're gettin' somewhere!  Look what a difference 4 days makes.Keep practicing and start experimenting with little changes to see how it affects the bead and make a mental note to not do what doesn't help make an improvement. Reply:Very nice improvement from the first one you showed on your other posts. I also agree with trouble007 there is no need to start a new one for every update plus it would be much easier for us that is taking an interest in your progress to keep track. It would also be helpful to know abit about what rods you used did you switch rods to 7018 what was your machine set at did you attempt to clean or prep the metal before starting. I take it you are experimenting with your position  of your body and rod?Boilermakers local 687looking for a place to put your website try this site out www.buzzhostingservices.comenter this promotional code in and get 50% off for life on our ratescode: Boilermakers
Reply:Yes these were with 3/32 7018, Ran at about 90 amps.  Have a poly attachment for my grinder that does a nice job cleaning up the metal.  Believe both of those were run with a hand supporting the rod.Ran some more beads these evening a bit hotter closer to 100 amps.  Not getting much time to weld each night but being consistent 30 minutes or so a night has done wonders.  Ran a T joint this evening that was way way closer to something it should look to compared to two earlier attempts that were utter failures.  I'll take pictures tomorrow.  Biggest issue I am now facing is welding parallel to the edge of the plate.  Seems like easy and ever time I am running towards my self.  Both of those stringers were supposed to be parrallel but came out not quite so much.  The soap stone lines would be a good approach but don't have one at the house.Would be great also if I had a welding table.  I took the piece of old pipe I was welding on the other day and buried it in the sand a bit and put these little 5x7" plates on it and somehow got my ground clamp to hold it but it beats welding on my knees like I was the first few days.As always what ya'll have taught me has progressed my ability 1000 times over and I truly am grateful for ya'lls input.  I'll try to post up some more pictures soon.
Reply:Good job, and a quick learning in 4 days. Good idea on switching to 7018, its a nice rod to learn on and look purdy too, lol. Crank it up to 95-100 ish and run it again it will lay out real nice and smooth..do that till you can weld bead after bead very consistent.
Reply:lol on your knees? well you goto start some where I guess lol just kidin lol sorry had to luagh on that one. yeah try to find reasonable metal table to work on. I'd say you are getting close to where ya need to be though keep up the good work and keep the pics coming well doneBoilermakers local 687looking for a place to put your website try this site out www.buzzhostingservices.comenter this promotional code in and get 50% off for life on our ratescode: Boilermakers
Reply:I have this crazy idea I am going to find a way to make a buck welding this summer so I don't have to teach summer school this summer(doesn't have to be much but if I sold one feeder/hog trap it would keep my summer free).  Got 5 months to get this stuff figured out with an hour or so of time each evening so I'll try to keep the updates coming.
Reply:Good luck you have come along way in just a short time from what I can make out any way.Trying not to be negative with my comments to you but you still have a long way in order for your product to be forth something you'll need to make sure it is durable. I know it sounds corny but penetration will play a big factor in this, your off to a good start though. I would like to see a dissected piece of that T fillet you mentioned to see what kind of penetration you have it probably is fine though if you are able to cut a piece of it off and show the inside to see if there are any gaps in the crease or not and you can do a bend test on it also to see how well it will hold up most people dont think of these factors and concentrate on cosmetics dont get me wrong by no means that has its place but if your weld can not hold up to minor punishment then it is worthless again not trying to be pain in you rear just giving some more good advice. I do think you doing great keep it up and it will all pay off in the endBoilermakers local 687looking for a place to put your website try this site out www.buzzhostingservices.comenter this promotional code in and get 50% off for life on our ratescode: Boilermakers
Reply:Like I said I know its far fetched but I am a long way away and will try and keep at it for a while.  Wouldn't be doing anything very structural but would like to cut the T apart I made to see just how it did.  On most of the beads I have been running on the plates they are just barely starting to show through the bottom.  Not buring through but getting nearly 3/16" of penetration on these lower settings.
Reply:I wouldn't expect there to be much penetration as you are running the beads directly on the plate and not in a joint like the T fillet was so dont worry too much about it bleeding through to the other side unless you are welding some sort of seam or joint try putting 2 pieces of plat together in a but joint also with anywhere from 1/16" to 1/8 gap in it this is where you will find the correct penetration for strength at.Boilermakers local 687looking for a place to put your website try this site out www.buzzhostingservices.comenter this promotional code in and get 50% off for life on our ratescode: Boilermakers
Reply:Ok so I basically haven't welded in a week and it certainly shows but I tried to run a few beads and show a bit more about the great set-up I am running. The new one off custom welding cart.  Had big plans on welding up this and that and said you know this dolly isn't doing anything so that paired with the custom electrical cord holders from lowes turned out this custom cart.Heres my little shop, its only about 1500 sq ft that would be great if I could take full advantage of it, but the wife thinks she needs the space to turn her horses out in inclement weather...  So I have to keep the setup portable.  The Angle iron was a very nice addition to my welding table as it gives me much more flexibility for attaching my work lead.  This also beats the heck out of welding on the ground as I was doing the first many days.Heres a filet joint I ran probably on day five.  Probably completely unecessary but I rant a 6011 root weld then ran 7018 over the top.  Didn't stop to take a picture of the root weld but the bead isn't nearly as clean as with the 7018.  The tan is just sand as it has been sitting on the ground a week. This is a T I welded this evening with 6011 at about 70 amps which is what was the maximum on the package.  Was not traveling smoothly at all and it showed.I believe this is the other side of the T joint.  Rod angle wasn't as good and left a few drops of heavy slag.  I cleaned up that weld with the poly wheel grinder then layed a 7018 bead over the top.  Ran this at about 100 amps once again on the top end of the rod rating.  Travel speed was a little smoother but had two starts and stops that kept the bead looking uniform across. Here is a filet joint I welded this evening with 6011 at 70 amps.  Still haven't quite figured out the trick for a good looking bead with the 6011.Heres a pretty terrible picture of the 7018 pass over the top that I didn't clean before photoing.Wife needed headstall holders, these are some prototypes.  The beads are pretty bad but I was trying to cut the hook off to straighten it out and it was on there like a sun of a gun so I figured at least I got decent penetration with the weld.Anyways as always I hope you realize how much I have appreciated all the help I have a long way to go but at least now I feel like I can practice and actually make progress instead of just burning rod.
Reply:Your 7018 flat seems just fine move on to vertical. You just need to watch the edges of the puddle on your joints and let it fill in, go slow and fill and move. You'll eventually love flat fillets with 7018, its just real purdy haha.
Reply:yeah it does look like you were moving a bit too fast with those all you needed to do was slow down and let the rod fill in the edges as you go along keep up the good work.As for your week off yup at your stage of progress it can hurt you some on progress but it also helped you to recap your mindBoilermakers local 687looking for a place to put your website try this site out www.buzzhostingservices.comenter this promotional code in and get 50% off for life on our ratescode: Boilermakers
Reply:One thing I began to wonder, I didn't want to waste a rod so I ran the end of the rod then started a new one.  Didn't post many pictures but it looked pretty bad bead wise.  What are some ways to pick up where you left off and continue a decent bead?
Reply:Good info here in this thread...for newbies like myself. Thanks for starting the thread Scot and thanks to all who have helped.  My son and I just bought a HH140 and are waiting for it to be delivered. Reply:If my wife wouldn't at least be ok with me taking half that space and making a workshop out of it I'd run her a$$ off.
