The bottle I got off of Craig's list is full of Helium 2200Psi I was going to trade it in for pure Argon. Instead of giving all that helium away should I hook it to the TIG and use it up practicing? Will the welding shop give me credit for the HELIUM or should I use it?

Reply:Typical helium is balloon helium and is useless for welding because it has at least 19-21% O2 added so kids don't suffocate themselves. You need pure helium ( or a helium mix designed for welding) to weld. What exactly does the label say on it?.No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:If it is actual pure helium you can weld AL on DC-... very interesting to do, so quiet.
Reply:I would definitely try it. if you had a second bottle of argon you could do some really cool mixing just playing around. Shovelon would be a good guy to ask about welding with helium mixes as he does it dailyTiger Sales: AHP Distributor www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P, Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma. Reply:Most welding suppliers will not give you credit for gas in a tank, and considering the high cost of helium, I'd say keep it and use it.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:If it is labelled as ballon helium it can have a couple things hindering it for industrial use.1)the cylinder is not vented and vacuumed before filling.2)the helium is cut with nitrogen to "stretch" it.If the fill tag just says helium get some thick aluminum, some 4043 filler and put your TIG in dc and have some fun.
Reply:I have burned up about 1500 psi of the helium the first thing I noticed is that it's harder to get the arc going than argon. The helium burns really hot I had to turn the amps way down.
Reply:Helium on AC is fun huh?Try it on DC....for heavy material it is cool. |
