Hey everyone.  So I started my new job last week and everything is going well so far.  I'm using a lot of 5/32 7024 which as you know is easy to run.  I'm having difficulty trying to blend my starts and stops on my top/cap passes.  Some of the joints are about 2 feet long and of course one electrode won't last the whole thing.  So how do I make it look seemless? Thanks guys.
Reply:In my limited experience with E7024 I found that  decreasing my rod angle ( more perpendicular) and increasing travel speed just a little will give you a good bed for your next start point, it also gives you a good scratch point for you next rod. There is only two problems that I had with this method : 1) you gotta make sure the area is 100% slag free to prevent slag inclusions. 2)  don't run too fast or you will have a crater at your stop point that will cause internal cracking.  Are you using a leading or trailing rod angle when you weld? E7024 acts differently  for each one.   I have managed to get some really clean start/stops using this method. Wish I had some pictures... If I get the chance I will weld some up on Monday and post them.
Reply:I'm using a leading or pulling angle.  I was told that since its such a slag heavy rod that it is the best way to use it.  This is my first job welding really heavy steel so I'm just trying to make sure I do it right.
Reply:I agree watch your angle and try to grind your stop before the new electrode.
