Reply:talk to cast weld hes the best in the feildbut ive great luck tig welding with ni44
Reply:You can weld cast but it needs to be really hot. Try a high amp setting and turn the wire speed way down unless you have a big MIG/TIG.
Reply:Thanks for the advice. What I got to wrk with is a 225 Weldanpower, and a small portable gas rig. So, some guys say gas is the way to go and let it cool slow in a gas grill. Any ideas?
Reply:Whoops! I forgot to ask, should the needle bearings come out?
Reply:Total disassembly, degreased, a sand pot for post weld slow cool................Yes, the needle bearings need to come out. Peter will be along in a few to guide you on the welding.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:The fact that the part broken is an edge or ear means that you can weld it with no pre or post heat.Bevel and weld away, when done with first pass use pointed end of chipper hammer to peen the weld, make cover pass and repeat. I would split it and clean it first, use a little sealant on gasket next to weld upon assembly.Use cast iron rod (high nickel) most are ac/dc.PeterEquipment:2 old paws2 eyes (that don't look so good)1 bad back
Reply:Hey Pete and all; Thanks mucho for all the good help with my Cast Iron ear repair. Got it done today using that Weldanpower 225 and it was sweet. 110 Amps, DC - and here are some pictures. Maybe this will upgrade me from Apprentice? LOL Attached Images

Reply:Glad that Weldanpower got the job done for you. Lost track of this thread.Did you 'V' and weld the other side as well? Obviously would require grinding/filing back to dimension afterwards.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:I've had good luck welding cast iron with the nickel rods on DC with my stick welder. It seems like it's always because I have made a mental error which resulted in the breaking off of the cast iron ear from something.... like the main mounting ear for the alternator on a big block mopar. So far the welds have held with no special pre or post heating, but the same can not be said for my attempts to weld a crack in a cast iron bellhousing. The more I preheated and tried to weld, the more I would hear the fateful pop as the weld cooled and cracked another inch farther along. Finally gave up and bought one on Ebay.Miller Syncrowave 350Millermatic 252/ 30A spoolgunMiller Bobcat 225g w/ 3545 spoolgunLincoln PowerArc4000Lincoln 175 Mig Lincoln 135 Mig Everlast 250EX TigCentury ac/dc 230 amp stickVictor O/AHypertherm 1000 plasma
Reply:u can build up with O A, bronze brazing rod. then grind flush &drill a new hole .
Reply:Run a reamer thru the hole then grind the area flat and you are done!...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:It is too bad you could not have TIG welded that. You prepared it well though.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder |
