There's a miller deltaweld 450 on craigslist for $350, which looks like it's a CV machine for mig welding. The guy says it was used for tig, and has a tig controller box, just no torch or leads. He also doesn't have 3 phase at his shop to let me test it out in any way. Would this be okay for tig welding? I would have to scratch start tig with it i'm assuming, and this would be my first tig machine. I'll attach the pictures I was sent.Any input would be appreciated, Thankyou.
Reply:I re-uploaded the pictures in a smaller size but am unable to go back and edit the post, sorry everyone.
Reply:It's a CV MIG power source. 450 Amps at 100% duty cycle! Reply:I do have 3 phase, not ready to be plugged in but our compressor motor is 3 phase so I'm assuming I can have an electrician come and wire it in. The 3 phase machines go for cheaper it seems, since less people have access to 3 phase, that's why I'm looking at them(poor). My fear was that it wouldn't work, since I figured voltage has to osculate for tig. I really don't need a mig that big, although it would be cool, but would take up too much space(space I want to save for a similar size tig). I already have a mig machine. It also doesn't look like it comes with a wire feeder, so I'm sure that makes the deal a little less desirable. Thanks for the information everyone.
Reply:He does however have a lincoln ideal arc 500 which I'm sure I could buy a tig torch and bottle for. That one is cheap as well, but have heard it's hard to find parts for them and again, can't test it, and comes with no plug or leads.

Reply:Unless you need a big welder or AC capability, may I suggest something like the Thermal Arc 161STL? Relatively portable, 120v/240v operation and has everything except a tank of Argon. At $650, it's not a bad deal.http://www.ebay.com/itm/Thermal-Arc-...&forceRpt=true"USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
