Science Toy XV  Pneumatic Can CrusherWell it is Umahunter’s fault (LOL). I had to build on once I saw the can crusher clips. (http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...hlight=crusher mmmI can justify the build because I can use it in class as a demo of pressure and a few other things. My son is 13 and loves smashing the cans. I used the following air cylinder: http://www.automationdirect.com/adc/..._Bore/A24060SNAnd a two air valves I got from Fastenal. Reply:sweet how fast is it?  ive been looking at cylinders and planing to make one i can hookup to run automatically and im thinking some kind of larger pyramid shaped hopper to run a bunch at once glad somebody finally made one i seem to be continually planning 350P 30A spool gun cut master 51  syncro 250 other stuff " take a dog off the street and make him prosper and he will not bite you sad the same cannot be said for man" i didnt use punctuation just to piss you off

Reply:Robert HallThis would be hell on fingers.umahunterI'm please with the speed. It slams the cans pretty hard. The only thing I do not like (and it is minor) is you have to turn the air valve to extended the ram then close that valve. Then you have to bleed of the air with a second valve. The second valve is spring returned and easy to open. I should call the air cylinder folks and see what kind of valves they have to automatically open and close valves. It is fun and crushes a bunch of cans pretty fast. umahunterThanks for starting this thread.Dave ReberWadsworth Ohio
Reply:Robert I will do some looking. I think the paper is at school (hope snow day Friday) The one valve is not from Fastenal as I orginally posted. I got it from McMaster Carr.Dave ReberWadsworth Ohio
Reply:did you layer the cans from diet pepsi to hawaiian punch just for us? what a nice guy....... how much money do you get for your average familys collection of cans?

Reply:I tried the link to the site for the air cylinder and it didn't work. Could you tell me what size the bore on the cylinder is and the length. Also how many psi does it take to crush the cans.  I have alot of cans to crush so I'll be building one soon.ThanksKroekerMiller Trailblazer 302Miller Dial ArcMiller Suitcase 12RCVictor Torch

Reply:Interesting.I'd almost say to put an 'inter-lock' shutter/gate above the crusher section and below the can 'magazine'.  Maybe rig the valves to that, slide/swing the shutter/gate closed and the cylinder extends, then slide/swing the shutter/gate open and the cylinder retracts and then lets the next can in the stack fall into the crusher slot.  Slide/swing the shutter/gate closed and you smash the next can.  Repeat.  That should help to keep hands/fingers out of the crusher zone, and help to restrain the can being crushed vertically a little as well.Because as I'm sure you saw and learned, that pneumatic cylinder extends PDQ.Another source for parts and stuff.  Here is the section on pneumatic valves.https://www.surpluscenter.com/sort.a...r&keyword=AVDC  The best laid schemes ... Reply:here on long island those cans are worth a nickel each..way too expensive to crush..LOL
Reply:The crusher turned out very nice. Good job.

Reply:You should be able to find a cylinder in a spring return style that matches what you have. Then you need a valve with an inlet to cyl when on and cyl to  exhuast when off. Then one lever flip or button push crushes the can. When released or the valve spring returns the valve to the cyl to exhuast position. You could do it electrically or lever style. Another style of can crusher for large volume is a hopper above 2 tires where the tires rotate against each other.a v-belt drives one and the other is driven by the friction between the two.A large hopper can be used since there is no need to orient the cans in any specific direction.
Reply:Kroeker Welder man here is the info about the cylinder.Automation DirectPart number A24060SNsee if this link works:http://www.automationdirect.com/adc/...l&TxnNumber=-1Dave ReberWadsworth Ohio

Reply:This is Thor's can crusher.  I saw it a few years back but the video is now gone.  It was impressive.  I think these folks redid the website in the past year and a lot of older stuff got lost/messed up.  But you can read the specs and get a feel for it.  1.5 cans per second.  Yowza.http://www.designnews.com/article/13...ange_Crush.phpHe did a follow-up a couple years later on an improvement:http://www.designnews.com/article/53...n_Air_Ride.phpI really wish the video was still there, it was awesome.  It fed like a magazine into a machine gun.  Went through a stack of cans like bullets in an automatic gun.-DaveXMT304 with: 22A Feeder, or HF251 Hi Freq DC TIG air cooled
Reply:wisconsin has the same deal cans bought in that state cost 10 cents each and you get it back when you bring the cans to the can return. They scan the little barcode on every can to keep people from cheating and they wont take crushed cans.

Reply:i see if there crushed you wont get back the 5 or 10 cents back but if there crushed wont they still take them as aluminum scrap and give ya however many cents a pound that is ? it would seem to me they would want them back whole to clean and recap them not sure if that's even possible ???350P 30A spool gun cut master 51  syncro 250 other stuff " take a dog off the street and make him prosper and he will not bite you sad the same cannot be said for man" i didnt use punctuation just to piss you off
Reply:Hey Gang,My first post here. I was an equipment tech in a semiconductor wafer fab for many years. I weld as a hobby/home repair. I'm very familiar with those pneumatic cylinders as a lot of our tools used the same thing. Many had adjustable valves that allowed us to set the stroke speed in both directions. You can get solenoid air valves that have dual output that toggles supply air to one side or the other of the cylinder all the time. By doing that, you can use a push button to extend at near full speed for crushing, then use the inline adjust to allow the cylinder to retract at a decent pace, but not slam back which will wear it out faster.Regards,GregWelcome Greg,Do you have a reseller and a part number that might work well with this application?Regards,RobGreat Basin WeldingInstagramBlue weldersRed weldersMy luscious Table DIY TIG Torch cooler
