So was thinking about making an outdoor kitchen framed for my house.Does anybody know how the stone is attached? I also seen stainless steel sheetmetal siding.Anybody have a clue? Thanks.
Reply:I'm guessing wire mesh is attached to the frame. a scratch coat of mortar and then set the stone into another layer of mortar.Sure, I can fix it... I got a welder!!!
Reply:You can use self tapping screws to affix backer board to your frame, then mesh & mortar it for your stones. Buy American, or don't whine when you end up on the bread line.
Reply:Use hardiboard or wonderboard attached to the outside of the framing. Your fabricated stone or tile is attached to the hardiboard or wonderboard using thinset just like you would in any other application.--Wintermute"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow
Reply:I agree. You can also brush some concrete adhesive on to the hardibacker before you start for better adhesion. I sprayed stucco on mine. Much quicker and cheaper. And no....that propane tank is not installed underneath the grill. Attached Images
Reply:emc2kh... Where did you get the door kit? I just started MIG welding and I'm working my way toward building my bbq island. Do I have to have the doors made at a sheetmetal shop, or are the kits readily available? Thanks..

Reply:I knew this would be a good project to do!em2kh, is that steel underneath for the frame?
Reply:Thanks guys. I got those door kits on ebay. I built the frame out of .065 wall 1"x2" steel tubing. Much thicker than needed. Unfortunately, I had to pre-drill all of the cement board screw holes when attaching the hardibacker. What a pain. Any other questions..just ask.

Reply:I didn't coat the steel with anything, because it is very dry out here in Henderson. It is also fully covered by my patio cover, so no rain touches it. It's been 2 years and no rust to speak of.
