ok im new to this stratch start. i'm used to foot control, high freq and pulse.my problem is how do you end the weld? not being able to control the heat is a little differnt too!
Reply:I hear ya. Been on reduced hours at work so I bought a little lift arc tig to do odd jobs on the side. It's nice and all, not having a foot pedal doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would. But getting the end of the weld to look as good as it does with a high freq machine with a pedal just isn't happening.  If what you're welding will allow for it, put a sacraficial tab at the end of the joint that you can terminate your weld on. Then cut off the tab and grind it smooth. Nice looking welds by the way.
Reply:Thanks grimm 1!  maybe i will try that. there must be a special way to finish?
Reply:when your about done just snap it up
Reply:Are you tiggin with that 150 S ???My name's not Jim....
Reply:Snap the torch away along the length of the weld to avoid arc marks, and once the arc is extinguished, move the torch briefly back to the end of the weld to provide additional shielding until the puddle completely solidifies.
Reply:Are you tiggin with that 150 S ??? __________________yes i did the welds in the picture with it.maybe im not snaping fast enough? i hate arc marks     any other advise?

Reply:did not know there where problems with this machine not tiging.like to hear from others about it.
Reply:The whole idea of the 150 S base machine is that it is stick only.  That's why it is cheaper than the other two models Stl (lift arc) and Sth (high freq start).  In theory, you can dc tig with any dc stick welder.  Others have said that the S model just won't do it, but I think you are the first one to actually try it and show the results. How do you have the gas hooked up?  I'm assuming you have the valve on the torch, but how do you go from the regulator to the torch?  I don't see any hoses.  I noticed the other night when I had the cover off mine that the neg dinse connector has a barb on the inside of the machine.  Don't know if it would be worth the trouble of using it or not, but it is there. My name's not Jim....

Reply:i know you gotta pull the puddle from out of the path end you end a run, to avoid "fish eyes" . But that may only refer to steam vessel proceduresall I want in my life are....... white castle cheese burgers

Reply:You use one of these. You can hook your argon hose up to the first end and then your torch to the other end. And then just clamp your stinger to the adapter. __________________Steve WilliamsPipefitter, USW Local 5Shell Oil Products USSyncrowave 180SD, Maxstar 150 STHOld Dialarc 250 Thats what i use
