Okay, I would like to practice overhead and vertical mig.I am wanting to eventually do a roll cage and going to need to learn some weird welding angles. What is some good ways to practice?
Reply:Get some scrap, clamp it to a table hanging over the edge and lay on the floor?
Reply:On the job training.  One way is vertical and another way is overhead. Get herd un. You want to build a roll cage? Who will be inspecting it? Plate is one thing, pipe and tubing is totally different. Vertical is the one that takes practice. Start by leaning a practice piece upward steeper and steeper until you get the hang of going straight up. Vertical downhill gets no penetration to speak of at all. but going downhill works well for filling in blemishes, like on a cap pass. Overhead is a lot like flat. .......... Roll cage, as in, someone's life is going to be on the line, ...roll cage?City of L.A. Structural; Manual & Semi-Automatic;"Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is refined. Reply:Go down to the metal yard and pick up a stick of 1/4 to 3/8 thick flat bar, 2 to 4 inches wide.  Cut it into 8 to 12 inch lengths and tack them up into 4 sided t-joints.  Make a + sign with the plates, joining the long sides together, so you have a piece of metal that is 8 to 12 inches long and 4x4 or more on the ends.   Make 2 sets.   Use one standing up to practice vertical and use the other for overhead.  You'll have to set up a pipe stand to tack the overhead practice piece to.  Fill all 4 sides of each piece, keep putting in passes untill the whole joint is full so you have one huge solid square bar of weld and plate.   By the time you do that, you'll be pretty good at vertical and overhead, either that or you'll be good at making the same mistake over and over, LOL.Last edited by DesertRider33; 12-17-2009 at 11:56 PM.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:get some tubing, simulate some rollcage joints and have at it. learning  to noth material to get good fit up is integral with the welding.
