Built 2 frames for the skid loader, 1 will get a snow plow, pictures of that later as I build. and today I built this little jib boom. Material is a 5x3 3/16 rectangular tube. I have gotten a little lazy and tend to use the MIG alot more these days as it seems to work and dig in pretty good. Reply:Moving along we notch the vertical tube with a combination of the portaband and good old torch as I don't have a plasma. The notch and fit came up pretty good. Now I am not and engineer so don't kill me about my design. The most I will likely lift is and SA 200 with fuel and a battery so it should come up around 1500lbs. The rest would be stuff in the 2-300 lb range. But you know how that goes, we latch on to bigger and bigger things till we find the limit. Caution and time will figure what is safe and at what distance. Reply:And heres where I left off , not a finishe product but you can see where I'm going. We raised it up and now we can get up to 18 feet in the air. Might be OK to set trusses for sheds or garages. Have not decided on how to mount my Hook on the end. I might even put another secton of rectangle tube that telescopes out additionally. It is understood the farther up and the farther out you go the less the capacity. Will have to carefully experiment. So give me some suggestions and brain storm with me as to how to finish it off. For those of you not familiar with the skid loaders I can angle the boom back or tilt forward and bring the tip all the way to the ground out front of the machine by using what would be the bucket tilt control. I also have and Aux. hydraulic tap if I want to go hydraulic on anything. Almost forgot, I probably may want to reinforce that mid boom joint with some plates on the sides. Reply:That is really cool! I have heard of a local contractor who had pole for his skidsteer to use setting trusses on pole barns but I havent seen one. How practical or unpractical would it be to get a 22' reach?
Reply:Build/weld a strap to the top/back side of the boom to make a truss out of it. Kind of like the strap on top of a cherry picker. Start near the end of the boom & wrap it to the attachment point of the adapter. If you brace the strap in the corner, it will allow all the forces to be transferred to the upright & allow for a stiffer boom.If I could edit photos I would draw a line to indicate where to put the strongback.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build

Reply:I love these kinda threads!Just FYI, I have found a place who makes attachment plates, solid plate 5/16", and top bar is 3/8", for $128.00USD delivered to your door. CNC cut, very nice, and at that price I don't bother trying to make one.Very nice work. I made a wrecking pole/lifting boom, but mine went straight out instead of up then out. I lost most of my pics of everything I built on my jump stick. I am waiting for my bro to try to recover them. I also built two box plows, one 8' and one 10'. Are you building a pusher box plow or an angle regular plow?"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:Very nice. A jib boom comes in so handy and has been on my build list for a while. I like your design. This is the jerry rigged boom we used a few weeks ago to set tin Attached Images
Reply:I got lucky and found an old backup on my c: drive. Here is a couple of the wrecking pole/lifting boom (and sometimes harpooning martians, right DSW!) 100% stick welded with 1/8" 7018. The main tube is 5" x 7" 3/8" wall, the inner tube is 4" x 6" 3/8" wall. The arrow is 5/8". If I were to build another I would make a few changes. Although lifted and moved 2' x2' x6' concrete blocks approx 3000 to 3600 lbs, they weren't perfect sizes. It handled more than my Bobcat S300 would.Last edited by Stick-man; 12-04-2010 at 10:57 PM."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:Here is the 8' box plow. Here is the 10' box plow. Both are a little beat up. Some of the guys are not that great at pushing snow. I guess it really IS rocket science. I am gonna bend them back into shape, put another reinforcement to the bottom corners, paint them, and sell the 10'er. I used to plow at a HUGE shipping terminal and would leave the 10'er there. Now I really dont have a use for it because you can't legally transport it attached to the machine."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:Does the skid steer have enough umphh to push around snow with the small box blade?I have a JD 4500, 39 HP utility tractor. Liquid filled tires and backhoe, so weight is perhaps 6k pounds. I have been contemplating doing a quick attach pickup truck plow. What concerns me the most is my drive isn't. It's rutted dirt with a few patches of gravel.Thanks,-Jim

Reply:"Stickman" what is the name of the vendor for the plates delivered for $128. that is a good deal for 5/16. The best I could do is around 160 delivered? I will be gusseting the side of the boom joint , as far as the back strap I understand the procedure ,just don't think I need it .If I do go 1 telescoping length I will put it on. Just trying to keep the weight down. As far as the wrecking boom, I assume you punch it through walls or windows on sheds and small structures to pull them down, is that it?"Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251 Syncrowave 300 30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200 1 short hood SA250 SAM 400

Reply:Interesting.I would suggest gusseting and bracing the boom. Combination side-plate gussets and fish plates on the upper angle joint from the upright to the boom extension. And a brace underneath. And personally I think 3/16 wall tube is a bit light for structural stuff, without doing a lot of analysis and bracing and whatnot. YMMV.And a BIG +29 on being careful with the lifting. Putting weight out at the end of that extended boom will put all sorts of loads on the structure AND the vehicle. Because you have a weight out at the end of a boom, you have a HUGE torque or moment trying to bend and rotate things. Like tipping the skid-steer onto its nose or bending the lifting arms or your mount or the boom. Attached ImagesLast edited by MoonRise; 12-06-2010 at 02:03 PM. The best laid schemes ... Reply:kolot nice job fabbing up the ss mounting plate. Thank also for passing along the info got the 5/16" plate. I have an off-brand light duty "skid-hoe" attachment i bought this past spring NOS from an auction. Ended up bending the mount plate and ripping a factory weld where the hydraulic piston mounted to the boom, very poorly made imo. Anyways your thread makes me want to repair mine and build it better.Fat Bastard thats one of the better forklift plows I've seen done. Reply:Thanks for the skidsteer site, I'll be trying 1 of their plates as they look pretty good for the price. " Moon Rise" I wish I knew how to draw on the pictures, is that done in photo shop or something, anyway I will be adding a side brace but don't think I need the diagonal out front. I have worked around cranes, excavators and like for many years so I know how quich things change when you get out and up from the center of gravity. Like I said mostly in the 300 llb range or lighter. I may go ahead and add the back strap as I think I will go the telescope route. I thing the most strain is going to go on the bucket tilt cylinders. If you were to start traveling with a good load they will tend to bounce and may have to watch for overloading there. Thanks for the input.Last edited by kolot; 12-08-2010 at 12:01 PM."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251 Syncrowave 300 30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200 1 short hood SA250 SAM 400

Reply:Naudi2U I can't tell if you did anything for the angle on that blade. We did a similar rig to put a Fisher on our old 555B Ford years back. We tied the angle cylinders into the hydraulics for the bucket roll. Roll the "bucket" to where you want, then disconnect the cylinders. (We put flat face QD'S on the cyl lines) With the lines disconnected the cylinders would stay put, probably like the way you have the cylinders on that blade of yours. We had a long set of hoses with QD's set up to run from the machine lines to the blade clyinders. Want to angle left, roll the bucket up, want to angle right, roll the bucket down. I tink we had less than $200 total into it to angle the blade, and most of that was in the heavy duty flat face QD's that we used..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
