Have you ever liked the way ur machine welds in every way but one, and when you try and tweek it ever so slitely and the hole thing goes to POT!!!??? well i have. does enyone know the stock messurements of ur idle arm and how many threads should be showing on each bolt of the governer.   also iv noticed of the last few mounths that i can't get more than 111 amps to my remote box unless my ocv's are higher than gariffe tail, and my engine is screeming. could somthing be about to go? this is my first post i started welding pipeline back in january im 25.   thanks

Reply:volts to the remote? or amps? what are the volts at your power outlet with your machine on local fine tune on 100?If amps, can you get more amps by changing into a higher range?
Reply:yea i forgot about the welder info i have a 78 model black face. when in 240 and 100 on the fine tune the volts at my plug should be around 118 too 122 correct? i can only get about 109 too 111 and my grinder is luging down
Reply:iv always herd if ur governer is out of sink with the rack it blows sparks more than normal is this true.
Reply:sure what are your ocv's at when the volts are that low? if your ocv's are below 93 you may need more rpm, if your rpm is above 1550 check all your brushes main's and exciters make sure they are all there not worn out.  Make sure your OCV are about the same from remote & local +- 1 or 2. If your ocv's are the same and right on both local and remote and your rpm's are right you might have exciter coils going out. if your ocv's are close 86-100 I would get a better grinder and keep on going until you fry them.

Reply:ok my ocv's are always around 90 - 92 depending if im caping or hotpassing after 92 its too watery and imposible to cap with my rpms are 1525 to 1550 and the engine was resently rebuilt so it doesnt loose but about 20 when under load the only way i can get my ocvs up too 118 or so my ocvs are around 97 or 98. i have recently replaced mane and exciter brushes, do the exciter coils have anything to do with the way the machine welds or is that only grinder curent? thanks for all the info guys.
Reply:It sounds like somewhere in the circuit you are building up resistance. The more resistance you build up, the more you speed up your RPM in order to compensate.I would begin to go back through every connection on your leads as well as in your machine. See if you can locate any type of a "hot spot". In fact, you may plug your leads straight into the machine and see if it acts the same. Do you have your leads on reels?Are you running 300 amp brushes in a 200 amp machine?Will it weld one way when cold and change when everything warms up?Just a few things to check.HoboLincoln SA200's... at least 15 - 20. They come and go. Growing partial to the "Short Hoods" in my old age. Last count on Short Hoods was 13 in possession.
Reply:tried 300 helwig brushes stagerd in this 200 for a wile because this machine has always been realy speratic so i was trying to smooth it out it worked for a bit then i started having this trouble, i sence have changed back to all 200 brushes and it seems to weld worse
