OkayMany thanks for the multiple advices to buy this machine.I am going to post some pics.  This machine originally (probably not from the day it was born) was owned by the City, Water, Light and Bond.  As you can see,  it is fair machine.  I have posted pics along with my finger pointing to the broken part.  The engine is free, and as you can see, it was professionally rebuilt in the last of 95.  I need a little guidance on what to tackle first besides the throttle.   Plus if anyone happens to have a spare brass throttle/butterfly rod,  I could use it.    Can I assume it is a 6 volt?  No battery is present.  But the mag kinda gives it away.  Any 12v conversions out there?  Can anyone help me trace the year off the faceplate?Again many thanks for the advice.  Any offers to help restore this thing to perfection for little or no cost would also accrue many thanks...  Just kidding. Reply:SA 200's must not carry the same amount of respect in your area of this small world.  Here, they are worth more than what I paid and are coveted for welding pipe and general repair.  A throttle cable is not a sufficient repair.  No idle up and no top end control.  This machine has been babied by all accounts.  I am not going to ramrod it.  The governer contol assembly is a critical part of a 1450 rpm engine.  Without a governer,  it is impossible to maintain arc control or stability of engine rpms.  Without a governer,  this engine could top 4000 rpm.  It may not kill it, but would certainly hurt a fine specimen.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:Lugweld,I am not intimately familiar with that motor but it isn't that old, should be able to find any part you need with a little searching.  I did some google searching (guessing) when I was looking for a tig welder and found there was quite a few welder/generator/compressor equipment brokers around the country.  I would bet that carb/governor linkage is use for quite a few other setups as well IE: pumps, generators, aircompressors.  Get the Make model/serial number off the engine and check craigslist and ebay!  Ditto on not rushing the fire-up of the ole girl,  she will luv ya back if you don't push her!Best of luck, good Snag!TimA rich man is not the one who has the most but instead one who needs theleast. Reply:Hi, lugweld,                 Looks like you've got yourself a nice piece of machinery there, I know you won't be tempted into rushing the job just to hear it run. Someone will know exactly what you need and maybe even be able to let you have the parts, I love old gear,Made in the days when quality and a long working life took priority over cutting corners to keep production costs as low as possible. once up and running i'm sure it will become another bullet proof old friend.  Good luck,   Gordon.Last edited by gordon stephenson; 12-30-2008 at 07:00 PM.

Reply:lugweld...indeed those machines carry a lot of respect in my world too..but im not sure what you are pointing at in the photo, from what i see that is the small screw that sets the idle speed when the governor pulls back the throttle  that is run by all the gear below your finger... your weldor should run (if set at high throttle) at 1550 and when under load drop back to 1450i am not doubting you so i must be missing something in your photos
Reply:Pretty good looking machine to be that old. I don't remember when they became 12 volt systems. I believe electronic idlers showed up in 1970 so it is older than that. Buy a can of Lincoln gray paint and paint it. Please. It just doesn't look right the color it is.  And put some side panels on it. They are part of it's cooling system. When you get it going nothing made today will beat it's arc characteristics. Some will match it but not beat it. Enjoy.
Reply:Not for sure, but where you are pointing should be the screw for the low idle adjustment, There should be a hole in the bracket on the other end of the shaft, next to the engine block where the govoner linkage hooks up.Trailblazer 302Hobart Stickmate AC/DCLincoln SP 135 TSmith torchSpoolmatic 30A

Reply:Denrep,Good eye... I was so excited that I didn't even realize it was missing.  I think the guy might still have it. And originally about a year ago when I saw it,  I thought there were panels.   If there is no filter,  a paper filter on the end of the carb with a chrome cover might do.  I am trying to find the year as well.  I think the model number say its a 3554 and serial # is 391793.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:$350??!!  I think I'm going to be sick! That's an awesome find lugweld. The link from the Hobart site that [email protected] referred to is http://www.weldmart.com/ if you didn't find it yet.  There's another source for SA 200 parts that has been posted here on a number of occassions and that carb throttle linkage won't be too hard to take care of.As for 6 or 12 volt, is there a tag on the generator or starter or that recently replaced starter solenoid that can tell you?And if you're looking for offers to restore, bring it on over and I'll be happy to.  Only catch - it has to stay here.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:Even if you just type in the address in your browser bar?Not to worry.  To fix that throttle shaft, find some brass or SS rod of the proper diameter and have a throttle plate pad to match the existing shaft machined into it, drill and tap for the throttle plate screws, install the idle screw/max stop arm to the new shaft indexing it the same as the original before pinning it to the new shaft.  Install the auto idler and governor levers as required and done deal.Another option is weld/braze the two pieces of the original shaft back together and reassemble as needed.  You'll have to measure/record the indexing angle of the idle screw/max stop lever in order to reinstall it back in the proper location after repairing the shaft.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:From the front panel it's a late 1950's to mid 1960's model. The faceplate dates it in the earlier part of that range. These machines had magneto's thru the entire run from the 40's thru the 90's, that won't tell you anything. You have a generator rather than an alternator, a common upgrade to those machines is a modern alternator. The starter doesn't care if you upgrade from 6 volt to 12 volt.Another common upgrade is an electronic idler (not really needed for home use).If you send me the serial # I'll give you the year it was made, or you can go to Bill's welder repair website and get it.Regardless, you got a good deal.JTMcC.

Reply:Samm,If I had a couple of more grand,  I might have bought a new Ranger 250.  They come close to that "feel".  But now I need a truck.  The one the welder is on is on some shaky ground with me.  It runs fine and then starts sputtering and spark knocking and shuts off.  I have replaced all major electrical parts including coil, computer, distributor and it still is giving problems.  Can't drive it into town and back without worrying about it.  When all is fine it gets 27-30mpg.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT

Reply:I have found several of these in the past. One was at a farm auction on a trailer with leads.  It was running.  It welded great.   I think it went for 1000 dollars.  I only had 900 at the time.  Another one was down the road a little ways when this one first appeared.  It had mag problems and they had turned the mag into a distributor someway, but could not get the timing right.  It was a short hood.  They wanted 550 for it.   Patience does have its virtues.  When I first asked about this one,  he said he would get it running for $1150.  He later tried to auction it and it no-saled.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:Lugweld the serial number you gave me makes your maching a 1959 model. Keep in mind that older SA-200's are known as very nice welding machines, there are a lot of 40's and 50's models working hard on pipeline jobs today.Everything on that old girl is rebuildable or replaceable today. It was a good find. You can buy a brand new replacement carb (and other parts) from Mr. Fowler at Hybriweld.com. He has been a guru on these machines for decades. The best remotes are the Cable Control Kits Mrs. Cable sells. If you want the original paint codes I'll send them to you.If you intend to work the machine for a living, the first upgrade you need to make is the electronic idler. Most parts such as hoses, belts, points/condensers, ect are available from NAPA or a good local parts house that deals with contractors or farmers. JTMcC.
Reply:There is nothing magical in a magneto. They have a cap, rotor, points and a condenser. Simple old school ignition. Everyone can change these parts out. They only need to go to the shop when the impactor shells out. A lot of guys are skeered of mags and send them in fior $300 overhauls that they could of done in the front yard for 20 bucks.JTMcC.

Reply:Lugweld,.......Don't go celebrating or getting your hopes up yet!  In your Seventh picture showing the name tag, underneath where it says "NEMA", see that little arrow is pointing counterclockwise, meaning BACKWARDS. That means it can only put our REVERSE POLARITY!  so you can't use it for too much!   Now, down here in Crazifornia, we do everything BACKWARDS,    so I could put it to good use, and could easily make a new shaft, even a backwards one, for it.   Seriously, looks like a great deal. If you eventually get the exhaust manifold cleaned up, use dark-colored high-temperature paint on it to keep the future rust down. It might help if you can post close-up pictures of the broken shaft; if it needs replacing, I might be able to machine one if you can provide a drawing with the specs.
