I was wondering if anybody could give a little info on ABS welding certs. How do they differ from AWS? Mostly SMAW, and Flux core welding.
Reply:ABS is basically ship yards, marine, etc. Still different from Coast Guard code.AWS is (in general) structural. It's all still "welding" and they will still be giving welding test.Again.... in general.Lincoln SA200's... at least 15 - 20. They come and go. Growing partial to the "Short Hoods" in my old age. Last count on Short Hoods was 13 in possession.
Reply:As Hobo said, it's a welding code that applies to offshore(oil drilling platforms, etc.) and maritime construction.Welder qualification testing is similar to AWS, ASME, API, etc codes. The exact test conditions are different. ABS requires different test positions, different groove angles, and has different rules about what kinds of discontinuities(defects) are acceptable or not.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector |
