Water Tank

I have a 1979 international single axle dump.  I want to fabricate a 2000 gallon water tank that will slide into the back of the dump.  I have been looking for designs on the web and just have not seen any.Design thoughts:>>>Access to the inside for welding and painting>>>Baffles ???>>>Lifting hooks for easy installation and removal>>>Have thought of just purchasing a $1200 plastic tank???Any help or ideas would be great.Moose
Reply:I'd opt for the $1200 plastic tank.I wouldn't like the thought of having to paint the inside of a steel tank.You wont have to paint or weld the inside of a plastic tank.
Reply:By the time you price out the cost of materials for the 2000 gallon steel tank, the $1200 plastic one will probably be a no brainer. The plastic one will be easier to load and unload off the truck when you want to also. But if you just have to have a metal tank, consider aluminum or stainless steel, no worries about painting it then. But you could buy several of the plastic ones for that price, and that's before you even start cutting and welding. Whatcha wanna haul 2000 gallons of water for/to, if you don't mind me asking? Watering cattle, fighting fires, filling a remote swimming pool, conducting big "Wet T Shirt" contests?????

Reply:I just went thru this at work. We went with a plastic, 2750 gal tank for around $3000.00 new. Rough figure is a dollar per gallon but ours came with steel tube straps and a baffle. Steel is great until it starts rusting thru. Also, you would need to bend the steel for strength. Will a single axle truck hold 8 tons of water?"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! So YES you can own too many tools.
Reply:I have a 6 " well and its just not big enough to water lawn and all my trees, we have had some dry summers.  Close to the lake, so the extra PTO and a water pump with tank should work out fine.  The truck is a hauling machine,  I put heavy springs on it, it has a double frame.  At 12,000 pounds empty, I have come over the scales at 29,000 that's 8 1/2 tons.  Water at 8 pounds a gallon thats 8 ton.  This old International is a real workhorse,  put GM Throttle Body Injection on last year and it purrs like a kitten.

Not to mention your pump and hoses to go along with it, not that they would add a whole lot though.The plastic tank will weigh less than the metal one most likely.
Reply:I vote plastic. Corrosion and rust is a real problem. The good ones last forever. Likely cheaper too.
