Where in AWS D1.1 does it specifically address testing requirements for PQRs? I see where it has the requirements for prequalification for WPSs and requirements for WPSs, also Welder Qualifications, but not PQRs.

In order for a WPS to be prequalified, conformance with all of the applicable requirementsof Clause 3 shall be required. WPSs that do notconform to the requirements of Clause 3 may be qualifiedby tests in conformance with Clause 4. For convenience,Annex Q lists provisions to be included in aprequalified WPS, and which should be addressed in thefabricator's or Contractor's welding program.Welders, welding operators and tack welders that useprequalified WPSs shall be qualified in conformancewith Clause 4, Part C.3.2
Reply:Part AGeneral Requirements4.1 GeneralThe requirements for qualification testing of WPSs andwelding personnel (defined as welders, welding operators, and tack welders) are described in this section.4.1.1 Welding Procedure Specification (WPS). Exceptfor prequalified WPSs in conformance with Clause3, a WPS'for use in production welding shall be qualifiedin conformance with Clause 4, Part B. Properly documentedevidence of previous WPS qualification may be~ used., 4.1.1.1 Qualification Responsibility. Each manufactureror Contractor shall conduct the tests required bythis code to qualify the WPS. Properly documentedWPSs qualified under the provisions of this code by acompany that later has a name change due to voluntaryaction or consolidation with a parent company may utilizethe new name on its WPS documents while maintainingthe supporting PQR qualification records with theold company name.
Reply:I understand all of that. None of that tells me what the testing requirements are for PQRs. Are you saying that the requirements are the same as a WPS? because section 4 only points out the testing requirements of WPS and Welder Qualifications, not PQRs. Section 3 only points out requirements for Prequalifications of WPSs which exempts you from Section 4 testing. That is why I am wondering for the people that create PQRs and get them approved, where are the requirements? Neither section 3 or 4 specifically addresses testing requirements for PQRs. No offence but, I'm not seeing it.
Reply:PQR Procedure Qualification Record Where we record the parameters used to qualify a Welding Procedure Specification WPS. To qualify a WPS one must record the essential variables used and then test the welded coupon, per Clause 4 of AWS D1.1. Depending on many factors the test might include RT UT guided bend tests macro etch break tests tension tests .... all will include visual examination. That is why I am wondering for the people that create PQRs and get them approved, where are the requirements? The PQR is not approved or disapproved it is simply a record of events. It may record failure or acceptance of a WPS. Requirements of testing for WPS or WRQ differ. (WQR = Welder Qualification Record) 4.8 Methods of Testing andAcceptance Criteria for WPSQualificationThe welded test assemblies conforming to 4.8.2 shallhave test specimens prepared by cutting the test plate, pipe, or tubing as shown in Figures 4.7 through 4.11,whichever is applicable. The test specimens shall be preparedfor testing in conformance with Figures 4.12, 4.13,4.14, and 4.18, as applicable.
Reply:Thanks,That is the info that I was looking for!
Reply:Bart do know I am pulling all of this from a 2008 copy of D1.1 so the current book might have different information or chapter headings. The basic information remains unchanged. |
