Sorry in advance if this doesn't post correctly-doing this from a phone. I've lurked on this forum for a while now and have learned a ton from all of you. I think I'm getting there but would like some professional opinions.info- ta 185 set at 85 amps DC, about 3/4 pedal mostly. Gas is 15 cfh. 1/16 grey tungsten sharpened about 1 1/2 diameter of tung. 1/16 er70s2 filler. Metal is 16 gauge 1" square tubing prepped with flap wheel and acetone, very tight fit up.Being new to this, there's so much going on at once and I start forgetting to apply the basics. Reply:Welds look a little dirty and the beads a little large. I normally would assume your gas was too high and sucked in contaminates but 15 is good, so now I would assume you may have been too far away and 'long arc'd' it.It is getting there, just practice and time looking at the puddle.
Reply:You're welds are looking a little hot. Probably a combination of having your amps set to high and moving to slow. Judging by the lack of consistency to your weld ripples and un-uniform width I would have to say it's mostly from your speed. You're new to tig and don't have your rythm down yet. It'll take time. Tig is usually regarded as a difficult process to master. But I'm sure with some more practice you'll be making nice consistent welds in no time.On the plus side I'm sure you got penetration all the  way to the root. And while not as pretty as the welds some one with experience can make, they look like they're functional. Just remember at the end to let off the pedal gradually to prevent the pin hole from developing.Good job on the prep work too. Being able to fit something up well is half the battle some times.
Reply:Thanks for the advise. So should the torch stay moving at a constant pace or stop and go with the dips? How long should it take the puddle to form?
Reply:anyone else have any tips for me?
Reply:Did you clean the inside of the tube?  Very easy to draw crap up to the surface if you don't clean the backside.  Make sure you're not running a torch angle much greater than 15 degrees.  Rookie mistake I commonly see is to bend the torch back too far in an effort to see what's going on.
Reply:Guilty.I only deburred the backside. What about back purging? Is that mostly reserved for stainless?

Reply:keep the arc short and you'll get puddle in 2 seconds. floor the pedal then back off..play with it. get lots of metal, cut it so you can make some tee joints ( 4" x 2"  pieces work nice) asnd make some tee joints( fillets). the back side will get flaky from the unshielded heat.
