I am wondering which welder is better as far as reliability and simplicity, one that uses a shunt type system to vary the amperage or one that uses multiple outlets and the user has to move the electrode from one output range to the next. I would think that there are pluses and minuses to each one, just wondering what the pros and cons are for each type of machine.
Reply:Reliability wise the one with no moving parts at all (the second one you mention with several outlets) seems to be more robust.However I think that the drawbacks do not compensate. I mean that you cannot finely adjust the amps with those machines so you are forced to work with what you have.Do they make these kind of machines today anyway?Mikel
Reply:Yes, they still make them- the Miller Thunderbolt / Hobart Stickmate are the movable-shunt type. I also prefer them for the reason of adjustability. The older Century welders use a different mechanism for moving the shunt but work the same in principle. Both are easily found on Craigslist.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
