I'm starting to get things together to make my welding table.I came accross a drop piece of clean new 9/16 that is just a inch or two larger than what I need in both directions. It is 43 X 55 inches. They say it weighs 376.5 lbs,, sot that would be about 41 cents a pound.I don't buy steel very often so I'm not familiar with pricing. They offered the above for $154. Is this a decent price?Victor Oxy weld/cut Setup Meco Midget Torch outfitEverlast 2016 250EX & Power Cool W300Lincoln Power mig 210MP w/amptrol and Spool GunEverlast Powerarc 200 Hypertherm Powermax 45Bandsaw, Lathe, grinders, press, Bridgeport, etc.
Reply:I'd snatch it up!! I think I was quoted $230 or 260 or so for a 1/2 plate that was 32x56 a few weeks ago... I ended up buying a used table 48x48 for $250 instead.ESAB Heliarc 252
Reply:That seems like a good price. Remnants at the local steel yard here in SoCal is $.55 per pound.
Reply:Great price. I got a 24" x 36" of half inch plate for around $150.
Reply:Great! Thanks everyone.I'll go pick it up tomorrow morning.Victor Oxy weld/cut Setup Meco Midget Torch outfitEverlast 2016 250EX & Power Cool W300Lincoln Power mig 210MP w/amptrol and Spool GunEverlast Powerarc 200 Hypertherm Powermax 45Bandsaw, Lathe, grinders, press, Bridgeport, etc.

Reply:Here in Canada i think its somewhere between 0.40$ to 0.70$ pound of steel, i always worked in shops and never buy steel for me at home but i heard a lot of people doing renovation and small construction like balcony repair and hand rail repair and they buy their steel directly from some fabrication metal company, like structural shop or big ornemental shops, because those shops can buy steel for cheaper, so they can buy steel for you with their company account.I don't think they all accept but you won't die to ask some shops! If you are a home/garage worker and do local job and you ask a small 4 or 5 workers local fabrication company they'll see you as competion, but if you ask large institutional/industrial/commercial shops they can accept and just don't care of your small job!Calculator > Bevel Square

Reply:I just bought a little over 300lbs of stuff at the local scrap yard here (usable stuff even if a little rusty) at .35/lb for what its worth. I haven't been out to the local steel distributor yet to see what they charge for drops, but...
Reply:My local steel supplier sells the drops for .55 a lb all clean new pieces. sizes vary but that will give you a cost comparrisonmooseTimmetalcraft by mooseSoutheast Michiganhttps://www.facebook.com/Metalcraftbymoose Stupid Hurts!!
Reply:Did u get it? I did my table with 3/8s plate and I hate te day I made that decision. Thinker is better for sure. I build mine off miler plans and it warped from some heating of a stupid peace of cast iron trying to remove and ez out.Not I got about 3/32 sag and man I hate it
Reply:Yeah, I got it. It seems fairly flat. I saw no gap between the surface and a 4 foot flourecent bulb and using a flashlight. It is in my enclosed utility trailer now. It is pretty clean. Just light mill scale here or there. It will sand off easily. I also bought the steel tubing and stuff to make the table to go under it. Next up is in two or three weeks when I get some time to start the table frame build. I still need to get some mig wire for the job too. I'm going to incorporate a couple of old Sears Craftsman metal work tables that I've had since the late 1980's into the sides of it. They have drawers and doors. It should look good when done. I will remove the OEM tops, of course.I think they may still make them. Here is a pic and link. The ones I have are similar, but no pegboard holes on the sides.http://community.craftsman.com/Craft...ws?tab=detailsThe only thing I am wondering about is the final size of the Plasma/Oxy grate. I was thinking of making it the entire 43 inch width aat one end, buth not sure how deep.Last edited by Housedad; 11-18-2012 at 07:44 PM.Victor Oxy weld/cut Setup Meco Midget Torch outfitEverlast 2016 250EX & Power Cool W300Lincoln Power mig 210MP w/amptrol and Spool GunEverlast Powerarc 200 Hypertherm Powermax 45Bandsaw, Lathe, grinders, press, Bridgeport, etc.
Reply:I do railing layout and others architectural layouts all day long at work, so i know a bit about working on a table, if i can give you an advice, even if you have a 1 inch think welding table or a 3/8 thick, both will curved years after years, it will take more time to twist and curve a thicker table but it will curved because of the heat of if you tack and grind small stopper to make a jig on you table. My advice to always work on a flat and straight table will be to tack your table to the frame only, do not full weld the plate to the frame to make it easier to turn your table each years.I do the samething at work, every 2 weeks before christmas, between 2 projects i take an hours to change my 20' X 4' plate table on the other side.Calculator > Bevel Square
