hi guys. Im new to the forum here and Im a fusion welder (mig/stick) in the mining industry.maybe some of the pros here can help me out. my question is simple.  when welding mild steels, at what workpeice temperature does after-the-fact contamination of the cooling weld stop being a concern?more specifically, oily welding gloves coming in momentary contact with a cooling workpeice... thanks in advance

Reply:Really oily gloves are a fire hazard, they can catch fire and you not notice it until your are burned. Also safety issue on slipping of your grip on objects. Get extra gloves for handing oily steel use dry gloves for welding.  This assumes you are cleaning the oil off the welding surface as it will affect the weld and also create hazardous smoke too.
Reply:At the Solidus, more importantly could be the phase transformation of the materials accelerated cooling rate from the gloves.I forgot how to change this.

Reply:I wish I could keep my gloves oil free. I always clean my parts before welding as is obviously a necessity for quality purposes, however the darned machinists that fab the parts I fit are slobs and some oil accumulation is unavoidable on my gloves.Im not handling anything that is so hot that ignition of the glove is a concern... nor are the gloves "that bad." they are however bad enough it bothers me when I change my stick electrodes etc. it doesnt help that the supervisor pressures me to make my gloves last many weeks...thanks for the responses

Reply:no Im not welding underground. my company makes heavy equipment that is used underground. the supervisor really is well intentioned... hes just old school and cheap. the type that would spend a dollar to save a quarter.
Reply:Two pair of gloves, one pair to wear during the clean uand set up process then change to a clean par during the welding process.
