hitch mounted BBQ pit

id like to build something along the lines of this only half as big. anyone got any info or pictures they could share on building BBQ pits? what do you paint the finished product with? thanks

Reply:ya it would probably be better on a small trailer but i wanna make one just like that except half that big. it would be perfect hitch mounted for tailgating and stuff imo.

Reply:Also check into tag laws, most states have a cow if you cant see the tag from the rear and will get you a ticket from the nice policeman. I'd prefer a trailer as well, easier to hook up, easier ti unhook, beer runs are possible while someone is cooking,
Reply:thats a good point. do you thing id be ok if i made a small place to mount my plate on the pit frame so when i take a trip and im gonna take this with me i can just put my plate on it?i dont have a plate on the front of my truck b/c you dont have to in texas so i could just put it on there and leave it.
Reply:i bought a little hondo jr by new braunfels smokers today for $90. its exactly what i would build and is probably cheaper than what parts would cost me. now all i have to do is come up with some kind of mount for it
Reply:That may suffice, since it doesnt have wheels that actually roll on the road, I think it should be considered part of the vehicle and not considered a trailer, also remember it has to have lights to illuminate the tag.
Reply:ok try to envision this. i have 2x2 pipe coming out of the reciever hitch like a foot or so, then turning 90 degrees and going straight up a couple feet and then it hits the grill. do you think this 2x2 pipe infront of the liscence plate will get me a ticket?

Reply:Jack,Here's a couple of pictures of the unit I built a few years ago.  I have some Inventor (3D) models of if somwhere, if interested.  I do know that it's one heavy son of a gun!I installed a 2-1/2" x 1/4" receiver tube on the bottom of the grill/smoker, and made a large "L"-shaped bracket to haul it on; in the 'tow' position it's high and close, and in the 'grill' position it's lower and away from the tailgate.  I also added a small stub of tube on my car trailer, and plug it into there when (and that's rare!) I go racing...I have some more pics of the build, if interested...Chris Attached Images
