Reply:It depends, the one who is the absolute best doing it, but hates his job because he would rather be playing violin in the orchestra isn't going to make as much as the guy who is a proficient stick welder and LOVES his job welding gas pipe. You have to find out where your interests lie. I used to think I wanted a mobile welding company that would do any process, any time, any place kind of thing. I found that I enjoy doing residential wrought iron (actual wrought iron, not welded chinese castings) and building big iron doors. I have been very successful doing it as well, just took a bit of time to discover my niche.

Reply:go to ND, they are working on starting a fast track program to get into the pipe welding/fitting. I think its a 36wk program, if you cant pass the test then your out

Reply:Stick and Oxy has always been the place to start and it is the least expensive.  Even if you do not do it for a living it may help you keep another job.  I was often the only mechanic that could weld when I was working at dealerships and it came in very handy.
